You should think of peoples' health and stop that burn barrel stuff. If not your friends and neighbors then your own.

Are you kidding? From New York State?

What happens to your garbage (assuming LBrown59 is even burning garbage and he probably isn't)? Are you saying it would be better if he piled it up and shipped it to PA, OH, or the Midwest like NY state does? (yes, even upstate NY) All garbage is either burned or buried. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't happening

At least you have a 360 degree view from your glass house...sheeesh...

1948: Fresh Kills landfill is opened on Staten Island, New York. It becomes the world's largest city dump. Along with the Great Wall of China it is the only man-made thing visible from space.

Nice burn barrel base, LBrown59...

I was curious if anyone had a good design for a burn barrel so looked it up on google. Don't do it you won't like it.

Hmmm..well I did it anyway. Here are the results.

The first entry is from the Alaska State Division of Forestry and it is followed by a complete page of proper burn barrel design. Wow, you were right, scary stuff

We don't have burn barels either. Myson-in-law was warnd bythe fire dept. He could have gotten a 2000.00 fine. The fad here now is to buy the fire pit ,is 24 inches around or less,it is regulated by the state of NH. I had to get a controlled or cooking fire permit, suppose ot call when I want to use it. I have five acres so have the room. My friend got one,he lives in city, setback is 25 feetfrom any structure to the pit. His fire dept. wants to inspect his pit first. I don't have anything against barrels, but the barrell if it rusts out or falls apart can be dangerous. plowking

My "burn barrell" is an outside wood furnace and it will burn about anything with very little smoke.
When I had three teens at home they bitched in the spring when I quit using it for the season 'cause it also heated all our water. Three long hot showers, and there was still enough for my wife and I.
Came in handy when the hot water heater died and no bucks for a new one. Then come summer and we still had water warm enough for a shower when there was no fire. Seems like the black steel roof was gathering enough solar heat to make it warm enough to be comfortable. Kinda like 'Nam when we put a long, black hose on the tin roof of a hooch to get hot water.

*OK so now why is the pit any better than the barrel?
