Default Has any one had their drive tar and chipped?

In the thread "Questions about paved driveways" cup149 asked this question. I thought it might be a good idea to create a new post in case people didn’t see it under that post. I need to learn more about it. So far, it sounds like it’s just what I’ve been looking for.

cup149 - Thanks for bringing this up!

Mosey, Around here its called stone and oiled. They use bituminous oil and washed crushed stone that is very fine, either 1's or 0's. I live on a privete drive that is about 1/2 mile long, and we do this to our road about every 4 years. It has built up a nice base and now we are thinking of blacktoping over the top of it this summer. The two things I don't like about the stone and oil is the stones can be plowed off in the winter, and its not that smooth. But it is self repairing come summer time, when the temps get into the 90's. It is alot cheaper than blacktop, but needs to be done more often. So its a pay now or pay later deal.

My folks did this a couple of years ago to their 1500' drive. It's held up extremely well. I questioned the "plowability" of the drive. Dad modified his blade with a removable rubber squeegie and hasn't had any problems.

Don't remember the cost, but alot less expensive than asphalt.

The county I used to live in had a double oil and chip treatment in front of the courthouse that held up pretty good, but then it was over a paved road.
