Putting up a metal garage ceiling with my tractor

Here are some pics of my weekend project:










I bolted a 10ft wide frame built out of lumber to my tractor bucket (the holes were in the bucket from the factory) and used it as a platform to lift 20ft and 16ft sheets of metal to the trusses which are 12ft high. and 4ft O/C.
It worked out great and I was able to get it all done in most of last weekend by myself.
I'm gonna blow about a foot or so of insulation on top of the metal. I framed the walls with 2x6's and used r19 in them and I think it should heat pretty easy this winter. I'm gonna heat it with a wood boiler

Great job. I plan on using the white metal siding for the ceiling when I get around to having our pole barn built. Thanks for posting the pics, great idea and set up with the FEL.

That's really slick. I am also very glad none on the pieces slid off and made two parts outta you! You got a huge amount of work done...really impressive.

With 4' O/C truss spacing, do you have any concerns about undesirable deflections of the ceiling under the load of 12" of blown insulation?

I specified this when I ordered the metal and they said it would be fine with standard 3/4in tall ribbed metal, so I'm hoping they're right.

Jdmar if you look closely at the pics I left a "lip" at the front and back of the frame to keep the metal from sliding off.

You have nothing to woory about.

We do this with trusses 8' O.C.

I built a taller version to use with my BX23 for lifting and installing 4x8 OSB for the celing in a 9.5 foot high building.

That's really slick.

I just clamped the OSB to the frame till I got it lifted into place.

Just a perfect example of how many uses we can all find for our front end loaders ! I have had a front end loader of one kind or the other for over 30 yrs. and it is just amazing how much time and money it has saved me ..not to mention jobs I probably would not even have conceived or attempted had I not had a FEL --I find myself, when looking at a project always first thinking of the FEL and if it can be utilized...Great job and ingenuity..

Now, what engine block do you have off to the side of the shop? Inquirying minds want to know.

The engine is a 355 small block chevy. I bought it from a guy who was in the process of rebuilding it when he got shiped to Iraq and he never finished it. I got the whole motor with new pistons, bearings, rings, gaskets, etc. machine work done, and the engine stand for 100 bucks. I could'nt pass it up. I'm not sure when I'll use it, but I will eventually.

The metal ceiling is just regular white pole barn metal, I got it from D.C. metal they cut it to the customers' specified lengths. I bought 1,400 sq. ft. for just under 1,000 bucks including delivery. It makes a really nice ceiling for a garage.

Did you get liner panel or exterior grade steel?

It is #2 grade steel, the same thing people use on pole barns. I haven't heard of liner panel. Lemme guess, I could have saved money with liner panel

Not sure what #2 grade is but yes Liner Panel would have been cheaper than exterior panel.

Liner Panel is just a basic white painted panel that has no paint warranty.
