I have several sections of 1/2" cable I use to pull down trees, etc. I do a Molly Hogan (aka Flemish Eye) and put one cable clamp on the tail. Works great and if the clamp is checked for tightness from time to time they are almost as strong as the cable itself. My question is what to do about the cut end. Over time they fray and make a mess of sharp wires. I wrapped them with tape but that didn't last long. I suppose I could bind the end (think there is actually a term for this) with cord. Looking for ideas. Have even thought of using some heavy plastic heat shrinkable tubing.

What about ox/ace torch with welding tip, and melting the ends into a ball? would that work?

Cut ends I usually burn them in a ball with the oxy/acet torch, then grind the rough spots smooth

You could learn to do real splicing.
In this way the ropes don't come apart and over time the sprags end up inside the rope.

Put a big enough eye splice (or Flemish Eye) on the cut end to pass your Molly Hogan through.
Then you can snare your tree with the business end and have a quick hitch to a ball, hook or D-ring on the pulling end.
I might try the copper crimp. The torch seems like the best idea but don't have a torch. Might get a friend to do it.
The real splicing links are very interesting. I remember my dad who was a logger in his early years talking about the old timers splicing line that would go through pulleys. Might try it sometime when I have some time.
The big eye to loop around has a good chance to kink the cable and weaken it, IMHO. I prefer to wrap the cable a couple times around the tree and secure the end with a clevis. With the friction of the wraps the end has very little tension and the larger clevis pin has less chance of kinking the line.
