Tupelo, black gum, sweet gum, are different animals compared to tulip poplar, yellow poplar etc. If my dendrology is correct

You are correct. The point I was trying to make is that since he lives in connecticut where tupelo is not common (usually planted as an ornamental),maybe what he had wasn't tupelo. Tulip poplar came to mind as having a similar name. Not saying it couldn't be tupelo, but I haven't seen it in any abundance in ct.
