I bought a new Alaskan Mill at an auction a few years ago, haven't used it yet. After reading this thread I think I'll have to try it out...finally. I have an old Stihl 051av that I'm hoping will have enough umph for it.

Bailey's online, or im sure your stihl dealer can get one. I've heard good things about the Oregon powermatch plus series.

I saw some big ones up at Woods in Longview but wasn't sure if they were for a Stihl or some sort of processing machine. I will have to ask.

looks like a long bar is as expensive as the engine... Oi.

It might be a good idea to ask your Stihl dealer about parts availability before investing in the 090. There was a guy in the Yahoo "Milling" group who used a big Stihl and loved it. When people quit logging with big saws, parts became very hard to obtain in his area, Arkansas/Oklahoma. Things might be different in your location.

You would be surprised how many parts are avail for 090s. A lot are aftermarket but still decent quality. 090s are awesome because they have more torque than the 088. Torque is more desirable than R's in chainsaw milling

Granberg really encourages ripping chain. It is less taxing on the saw and I think it cuts smother. As for saw size it all depends on how long a bar your going to run. 044 is probably as small as you want to go (70cc or so) and you would be working her pretty hard with a 28" bar.

If you are going to run a 28 inch with the 44, its worth checking your running a small counter sprocket to lower the gearing on the chain speed. On 66's with 22 inch bars I think we run a 8 tooth for speed but for the longer 36 inch bars we cut them down to 6 tooth for more torque (and oiling)

Heres a mill I think is pretty cool, they can now do a 8inch cut per pass
