Just as the title says. I liked the color of the Benjamin Moore "barn red" stain but just realized its only a stain and offers no weather protection. The Behr stain plus weather protection would be great but their red colors are limited. This is going on a 50x70 barn with new rough cut popular siding. Any one have some recommendations please?

Thank you,

I've been wanting the same color red myself for a long time. I want to redo the house red with black window frames / sashes. Any pictures of the barn?

I use Cabot stains. The stains soak into the wood. They clean up with mineral spirits. They can be brush painted or sprayed. They come in solid, and semi-solid. The solid provides the greatest protection.
I would never use a latex stain- just sits on the surface of the wood like paint, and peels. Use the oil based stains that penetrate and soak into the wood.
The best thing about stains is that when you want to re-stain, there is no scraping needed. Paint peels, stains don't. Paint needs to be scraped to repaint. Stains don't. I consider stains far superior to paint.

Solid Stain (Cabot)

Read about stains- exterior stains for houses/barns etc are not the same as interior stains for coloring a piece of woodwork prior to applying a finish. The exterior stains are the color and finish rolled into one. I don't know Benjamin Moore stain, but I think it is more than just a color. Look it up online.
Good luck!

I used a Sherwin Williams Woodscapes stain product which claims to be "Exterior Polyurethane Semi-Transparent House Stain". It's only been on a year so I have no idea on long term durability. They have a lot of colors. I used Redwood on rough sawn white pine siding, gave it two coats (wood really drank up the first coat). If you buy anything from Sherwin Williams, get a coupon off their website, usually for 30-50% off. Otherwise the prices are steep.

Thanks guys for the input. I need to look at these further this weekend. The one thing I've noticed is that alot of these exterior stains don't offer much protection. Even their descriptions don't mentioned it much. I noticed on the Benjamin product needs a clear applied over top of it too. I like Cabots but even read several negative reviews on it also. Seems this should be easier than it is.

I used Sherwin Williams Woodscapes on my new barn on 1997. We applied two coats before installing the siding using rollers and then wide stain brush to even it out. I am thinking about doing another coat this year but just to add new protection. It's 12" wide pine shiplap and I have had zero rot or wood problems or problems with the stain. It is Woodsmoke, Acadia blue trim. The blue faded some in the sun and I have re-stained the big doors and trim.

I use their barn red paint on the house with some fading but red fades.

Do you happen to know if it was oil based back then?? I know the older Woodscapes products usually were. They seem to be transitioning their products to water-based, and the Woodscapes I used was in fact water based (realized that when I cleaned brushes the first time). I'd prefer oil-based if I had the choice.

This is the problem I see. Due to federal requirements all of these stains have changed over the years. Especially the solids and darker colors. What worked just 5 years ago in many solids is now a new formulation.

Ok was back on Cabots website and finally found colors for their oil based solid stain. Their website is somewhat confusing so still not sure I have correct color list but headed to Lowes now to verify. Anyway if I'm right they have a barn red and couple other reds I like. If the colors are correct do you guys recommend their OVT solid stains?
