Mak\'in Hay with John Day

Square bailing hay is a PROJECT. John wanted to get away from surburbia, I guess, and give us (me) a hand bailing squares. I had John hook up to my old trusty NH Hayliner while I took the rounder to clean up the scraps and if it got too late, well to finish off the field. Doug, my neighbor and his son Greg, were the "slave" labor as well as myself. In this picture, John is making a pass with a partially loaded wagon. I wonder if the TC is feeling the weight?

Another picture:

Here is a close up of John and the wagon. Like John's straw hat? You need a hat without a cab. Actually, a cab is a lot better than a hat.

John is being a real "gentleman" farmer. Driving the tractor is the easy part. That's Doug and Greg on the wagon. We know that they are sweating. Next time, I'll pull the bailer and John can sweat too.

Here is John making a pass down the field. Remember, I had to mow it, crimp it, rake it and then rake it again. It's nice being the boss on the final operation even though I am a "working" boss. That is, except when I am taking pictures. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

First full wagon. About 150 nice 2nd. cut square bales. No rain and good cure. Ready for the barn and some nice horselady's feed tub, for the right price, of course. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

2 full wagons in the bag and 2 to go. I think John is somewhere either answering the call of nature or refilling on bottled water, beer or whatever. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is John and Doug relishing the fact that they are halfway done. Plenty of refreshments in the cooler in the back of the Ranger. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

3 full wagons now......one wagon left to fill. I think the guys have already had their "fill" of square bailing, but I always keep the morale up with my jokes in poor taste and my endless ranting about the way my "labor" stacks the bales on the wagons. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The field is almost wiped out now. A few of my rounds are in the picture. John is amazed how fast I can round the hay compared to the square bailer. trouble is, rounds don't bring in the revenue like square bales.
