Mike,
That one pic where you are on an orange tractor (L39) and all the trees behind you, that pic is really a nice pic. The color of the trees is so bright; this is a really pretty pick.
I don't want to be to nosey but I have never lived in a part of the country where people blast up rack, much less granite. If you don’t want to say I understand but just out of idol curiosity what does a job like that cost. Also can you describe for us the equipment used and how it is done. I think it would be very interesting to learn about it. You certainly do have a lot of rocks. i also kind of smiled when I saw the pic of the nice big barn for the horse and then your much smaller camper for the humans next to it. I see who ranks in your family
For us to do the blasting we did, you have to look at our big picture and plans for the property. We have named the property, "Breezy Ridge" as we have a windswept view of the central valley in New Hampshire. On the ridge side, on a good day we see the Vermont mountains. Looking out toward the barn, we have a view of the hills around Lake Winnipesauke; however we can not see the lake.
I also have 1400 ft of road to get to the house site., half of which is yet to be built across wetlands.
The house location by the blast site fits the rest of the topography, still has a good view, and most importantly is out of the main wind blast coming up the ridge.
All that rock we blasted, a mixture of shale, granite, some quatz,& marble, from glacial till, will be used for landscaping and i plan on sorting and selling some of it. The reason it makes economic sense to blast is I need a lot of material to build the road. Some of the cost of blasting will be recovered from obtaining material on site.
A track driven rock drill is used to drill holes approx 8' feet deep and holes are drilled in a 5’ x5’ pattern and blasting charges are placed.
The blast is set off in a timed wave to pile the rocks as shown. The pile averages 12’-18’ high x 35-50’ wide x 90’ long and there was also a 40’ x40’ spot and 20’ x 25’ spot blasted.
I will use my tractor to move some of the rocks, but will hire out an excavator and dump truck to move most of it.
Cost of blasting for the weeks work was $12,000. Money goes so quick, but the house site will be as we want it and the my workshop/barn will have a 3 stall garage underneath, one bay with a 10’ x10' door of course.
All this is a few years away.
