Heavy Metal + Blue Grass?!?!

Just took a spin at iTunes and Krauss is listed as a country artist. Most of the later stuff sounds like 'soft' country, more like the older country stuff. But her older stuff sounds much more blue grass.

Someone mentioned Gillian Welch. I don't know who that is but Krauss has done some duets with her.

I like the stuff Tim O'brien and Hot Rize did in the 80's; great bluegrass! Also a real gem, is Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers; they toured with Hot Rize(inside thing ). They did an exceptional country swing.

For interesting stuff, go to Pandora.com, and plug in Alison Krauss. As they do a play list, they do a variety of musicians/bands in the same genre. You'll hear some great artists.

Gillian Welch has done quite a few duets with various artists in addition to her own work. Very independent about what she records and very non-mainstream country. I really prefer Allison Krause's early music to anything she has released lately. Actually looking forward to getting this new one though. Zep and Krause. Loretta Lynn and White Stripes. My what is the world coming to.

Her soundtrack appearances have given her career a boost. I've been aware of her for quite some time but first got interested from her songs on the "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" soundtrack which was very popular and gave blue grass a real popularity kick.

I like her music and I like blue grass but don't own an album of either. That may change soon. I really like live blue grass and have had a lot of opportunities to enjoy it. Shindig on the Green, an event that occurs every Friday night during the summers in Asheville, NC is a truly excellent musical experience with tons of talented performers, most of them local. All blue grass.

Yep, and that's another thing you won't likely see with Krauss.

Here's a tech question. On my copy of Raising Sand, the bass track seems too high. I don't have any high end stereo equipment but on a good home system with older Infinity speakers, in our cars that both have decent audio systems and even on my computer (subwoofer and two flat panel speakers) the bass track is overwhelming even to the point of distortion at times. On the stereo systems I can just turn down the bass and it sounds fine. On the computer I can use the equilizer to tune down the bass.

Either that's the way the album was produced and its intentional or there is something wrong with the CD. I don't think the problem is with my various systems since everything else plays normally on them. It is possible that the bass and drum tracks are emphasized on this album because much of it is dark and a bit 'heavy' in terms of mood. It just seems a bit overdone.

My technical question is whether or not a copy of a CD be recorded improperly? In other words, could a run of CDs from this record label have this type of flaw that was not intended or present on the original recording? It seems unlikely but I thought I'd ask.

In general terms, a copy of a cd should be lossless. If you had an error in a cdcopy.. it would probably be heard as chirps and skips and real noticeable errors, vs just a loud portion of the track. Only way i can think of thatt he tract is lud was if the recording source was loud.

More likely that you have some passive ressonance in the home / vehicle that you are listening to it where it rumbles... or the speaker in question has a particularly hi Q and is distorting due to hi output.. or any of a handfull of other reasons. Drop a 32 band eq inline and notch out what's bothing you. ( reburn the track that way on another cd and use that one in the offending location ).

The bands name is Hayseed Dixie. I first heard them years ago while working on the tractor and listening to the radio which did a story on their first album, A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC.

Its AC/DC's hits done to Bluegrass. It works. I bought the album.

Hayseed Dixie is good. I have another album, I am not sure who it is, but it is called "Pickin' on Nickelback" I like Nickelback and the bluegrass version is great.
