Steph is wanting the Orick (spellling?) that she used at her mom's, but they have carpet and live on a golf course. No red clay on concrete to deal with, so we've been hesitant to buy another lousy vacume cleaner.

1. If Steph wants an Orek, get her one. The vacuum that a woman wants is the vacuum that she will use.

2. My wife has had an Orek, and she is not impressed. You may have a different experience.

3. We have a Dyson. It works great on carpet. Every time we vacuum, we get enough dog hair out of the carpet to make a new dog. I am not at all impressed with the way it works on bare floors. It seems to push loose mats of dog hair around instead of picking them up. It may work better with red clay.

4. The best bare floor vacuum I have ever used is my stainless, Makita shop vac, with the floor attachment. The only problem is that women hate it because it is too "industrial" looking.

I would GUESS that the purple Dyson we have does have a bypass. With two kids the Dyson picks up more than just dirt and dog hair. The Dyson has sucked up lots of coins, gravel and small toys with no problems.

The Dyson does seem flmsy but also well thought out. Ours has not had a gentle life and we have had it for at least 5 years maybe 10? It just works.

Well, the best one I have for a bare floor is my shop vac as well.

Couple of problems. Hard plastic can scratch my wood floors (and I've tried to get around that, which usually causes more work in the end), and the discharge side of the cleaner can shoot up dog hair on the opposite side I'm vacuuming to the point that it looks it it's snowing with dog hair in he house.

Dumb question, whats the floor attachment?

If you go to this website and scroll down to the "12in Deluxe Central Vacuum Accessory Floor Brush Part#402D ", that looks like the brush I actually bought for my 12 gallon Craftsman shop vac to clean my billiard (pool) table. But it works well on floors, too.

It is not so much a motor bypass, as the motor impeller is placed after the collection tank/bag. Some older vacumes, looked like a turbocharger compressor, with the outlet blowing into a catch bag. This means everything sucked up must pass thru the impeller. Most modern vacs and pretty much all shopvacs place the impeller after the catch bag, so it catches all the debris before it can reach the impeller. I believe the Dyson has the spin filter/separator ahead of the compressor inlet.

The old Kirby vacuum cleaners were hard to beat for being good carpet cleaners, but the dust, dirt, etc. going through the impeller was one drawback. I can remember a penny getting sucked up and breaking a fin off the impeller of my parents' Kirby.

I'll add my two cents in praise of the Dyson.

We had guests coming over in May and one of them is very allergic to cats. We have four of them in the house and so I borrowed my brother in laws Dyson Animal. I couldn't believe how much hair and dirt it picked up!

Our friend had now problem with the cats until they were about ready to leave and she asked to see them. Since we had them shut up in a back bedroom they were no problem until then. She started to sneeze and had to leave the house.

My point is that the Dyson got all of the contaminants out of the rug.

We bought one a week ago and have run it on the rug daily. It still picks up more dirt and hair than I thought possible.

Consider us to be satisfied owners.

My 4 dogs demand the Dyson animal. No comparison to anything else as far as getting the dog hair up. For floors, you can turn off the rotary bush. I also clean it out further by putting it under the shower head after dumping out the hai ball. The amount of 'mud' that comes out from cleaning it this way is unbelievable.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Ended up getting the DC17 yesterday at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Funny, I had three women who had them and a store guy helping me out on which model to look at. The guy at the store mentioned that they discontinued the ball model in the "Animal" series which had me a little preplexed as to why? The general concensus was with 6 dogs and four cats, spend the extra money on the larger unit.

Best yet, after I paid for the cleaner and was putting in my car, one of the ladies I was talking to was actually parked next to me and was in her car getting ready to leave. She asked me which model I got, I told her, and she asked me if I used my cupon. I told her no, that I didn't have one, but also wasn't sure if the cupon would be good on the dyson (per Dan's comments).

Well, she gave me her cupon, said don't worry about it, and to try using it.

Went back into the store with my receipt, and they took an extra $117 off

I'll be able to give that vacuum cleaner a workout today and see what I think.

I know Bed, Bath & Beyond is a bit high priced on a lot of things, but they do send those coupons all the time in the mail. Each one has an expiration date on it, but our local store manager told me they don't pay any attention to that expiration date, so don't throw them away. So now we always have one or two here on the desk.
