Default Cheap Truck Tires?

The tires on my F150 are getting worn out and its time to get new ones. You guys know I'm a cheap son-of-a-gun and I don't want to pay a bunch of money and I don't mind buying off-brand tires. I only put about 10k miles a year on this truck. I'm looking for mud type tires but an aggressive all-terrain might be okay.

Years ago I got a great deal on a set of tires and rims that were shipped right to my house. I think it was from 4 Wheel Parts Wholesale, but surfing the internet I can't find any deals like that anymore. If you have not bought tires lately you might be surprised at the prices. A set of Goodyear Wrangler MTs cost nearly $300 per tire!

So, if any of you guys know of any good, cheap off-brand tires or tire/wheel packages, let me know.

No such thing as "good and cheap". Just go ahead and prepare to spend several hundred dollars.

My brother just purchased a set of the new Goodyear mud grips for around $170 each. These are 10 ply 235/85-16.

Sure there is! Or....there was. And if there is I'll find it. I got the whole set that is on there now for about $350 and that was for 5 tires, mounted and balanced! No-name mud radials. They were used. A fellow bought them. Ran them for about 500 miles and decided they were to loud and traded them in. I've gotten a good 20k off of them, which is not great. But, they probably still have another 5-10k of tread on them but one got a big hole in it and another already has two plugs in it from nails. And I know that I won't find another deal like that but I'd like to get a set for under $800.

Not bad. I think my problem is that I need a bigger tire on bigger rims. I'm looking at 285/???/17. When you get into the 17" the price jumps up. That's why I was considering getting a tire/wheel package with 16" rims. Most of those are still way over $1000.

George, Like you, I might put 1000 miles a year on my F150 (Farm use only). We have a tire dealer in town who sells some used tires. I paid 35 dollars including mounting and balance for each tire (good quality tires) with 50% tread remaining. Should last me another 8 years?

Can you install a 16" rim on your truck? I know some of the reasons the trucks makers increased the size of their wheels was because they increased the size of the brakes. I know most if not all of the newer GM trucks have to have at least 17" wheels.

Yes, it can run 16s. The 16s are standard, the 17s were an option with the off-road package. I'm not sure there is any actual benefit of 17 over 16 except looks and I don't care about looks at this point. But, if I go to 16's the cost of the rims will be added to the total price, of course. It would have to be a really good deal for that to work out.

We have a metal scrap yard about 8 miles from my house where they buy scrap metal to sell overseas. Many people bring their old junk cars and trucks there to sell for scrap.

The scrap yard will not take wheels or gas tanks. They lift the car with a forklift while you remove the tires and gas tank and take them back with you.

Most people just drive down the road a block or two and then toss the wheels and tanks on the side of the road.

When I need a spare I just drive up the road and look for one with the same bolt pattern I have and do my part in cleaning up the environment.

Thanks. I checked there. No mud terrain tries. The all terrain tires they have are pretty wimpy. Pep Boys has some sort of off-brand mud tire but I can't find prices on line. May have to swing by there tomorrow.

If you can find used ones, as you did before, they'd naturally be cheaper. I'm sure there has to be better deals, at least occasionally, out there, but I've never been able to beat Discount Tire deals for new tires.
