I read last week that there may be no such thing as good and bad cholesterol. That even HDL may be detrimental. It seems the key to cholesterol is not so much the numbers but the size of the cholesterol particle being either type A or B. Larger type does not stick to arterial walls as readily as smaller type. Also, I never believed anything was "good" for you as far as food intake goes. I do not feel there is anything that prolongs your life as much as there are plenty of thins we do to shorten it. I think it more that there are certainly "bad" things to put in your system and the rest is "normal" ( read natural plant based) things you put in your system. Our intestines are longish and not like a lion or tigers. Longish intestines are designed for plant products. We have canines not to eat meat but to crunch into cruciferous plant foods such as celery or apples or pears. My father was a baker. When I was a kid, normal for me was a cupcake and a jelly donut just before bed time with a big glass of milk. I do not think that is what Mother Nature intended.

On the breakfast high protein diet reminds me of the Atkins Diet. There is no long term studies only 6 month study on the Atkins Diet and only a 3 month study on the high protein diet listed on the link. I can see how the Cholesterol the body produces will initially show a decrease because of the massive amount of cholesterol you are eating. Remember the cholesterol test is a fasting test of you body producing cholesterol, not average cholesterol while you are consuming during the day.

Does not sound confusing to me. There are excellent vegan athletes out there. Dave Scott comes to mind. But I do wonder why Atkins did not do a 10-20 years study of Atherosclerosis of people on his diet. All he did is to put a warning in his book about people with heart disease should not be on it for more than 6 months.

Don....I am sure not endorsing that article or the Atkins diet...I think it is suicide to eat like that even for a shout time....I just meant, it is articles like this that confuse some people about the right way to eat and give still others an excuse to eat all their favorite meats, cheese etc....

I hope everyone does not need the kind of "motivator" I had because only 50% survive a heart attack. The party in the mouth rules more of what you will eat today than the heart attack (or bypass) in the future. I suspect this thread might help those most who are looking around the internet while they are recovering from their heart procedure.

Brin I know you are not endorsing the meat (Atkins) diets - I just wanted to give a little info for those who are confused. Sometimes it's hard to decipher the information to there.

Brin, thanks for the observation. I did see the links, but didn't post them all, but should noted there where more.

My personal opinion on diet is simple (not that I'm a good example), fruits grains and veggies and even with some of that, in moderation. Also this has to be combined with exercise. Most prepared foods dont seem like "real" food rather a concoction for the palette. Salt contents alone in many foods is insane.

When I did Atkins years ago, you were only supposed to be on the diet heavy in fat and protein during the weight loss period which was a short time frame. I think it was two weeks or so. There are four phases in Atkins with the high protein/fat diet being the first phase. Then one moved to different diet phases that added more fruits, veggies and unprocessed foods over time. The last phase was a diet heavy in fruits, veggies and unprocessed foods which is what people should be eating to maintain the desired level of weight.
