I saw this on the local news at noon today. I was in shock when I heard that this woman had been arrested for cheering too loudly at her daughters graduation.

I remember when my older brother graduated some 13 years ago. Our older sister cheered for him loudly. If that happened now. She would have gotten arrested.

It's just ridiculous.

I think this is what I heard about on the radio this morning. Apparently the parents had to sign a paper as part of the grad process, which included a portion about not cheering. The radio talk host pointed out there was more to the story than what the big media wrote.

I've got to be on the side of the "establishment" in this case. Every graduation ceremony, including my own, that I have ever been to, they have asked the parents/grandparents/friends/etc. to refrain from cheering/clapping/etc. until after the entire ceremony is over. This is pretty standard fare.

Also, at every one of those that I have attended, including my own, some parents/friends/etc. obviously felt that they were excluded from this and chose to cheer/hoot/holler/etc. when their child's name was called. This usually resulted in a reminder by the MC to not do this.

I personally don't think you're asking a lot of people to sit and behave like adults while the ceremony goes on. Again, at all of the ones that I have attended, there is a time for cheering/clapping/hooting/hollering/etc.

I think the folks that choose to ignore that are rude and inconsiderate to others. I've got no problems with the perpetrator being arrested or at minimum escorted from the venue. Denying diplomas is also fine by me. After all, they're not asking people to perform brain surgery - just behave.

The other part of me also says if you don't like the rule, then don't go the graduation ceremony. You'll still be graduated, still get your dipoloma, the ceremony is just that - a ceremony. If you want a raucous reaction when your name is called, gather all your supporters in a room of your house, have somebody call your name, and everybody can cheer. Problem solved.

I applaud that the woman was removed for doing what she was told not to do, in the manner in which she was warned she would be removed. I've read some other stories regarding this matter, and so far, all of the students and parents that are being punished are being punished in the manner in which they were told they would be punished for the infractions they committed. I can't see anything wrong with this. Again, if you don't agree with the rules of the ceremony, and can't behave as prescribed, don't go.

Or go ahead and get on the plane and start talking about blowing it up, don't sit down and latch up your tray table, and other disorderly conduct, and then see what happens.

Just my opinion. I think these people got what they deserved.

Yes it is upsetting. Just think the Bank Robber having been told it was not permissable to rob banks, and he would be arrested and tried if he did so. Sad the poor fellow was arrested, very upsetting. Society has rules and regulations to insure we all can enjoy the pursuit of life and liberty, not just a few.

In recent years I have been to a number of graduations where some of the conduct by some of the members of the audience was obnoxious. It was as if there was some sort of contest as to who could be the most juvenile, and it was a distraction from the graduate's accomplishments. Made me wonder if those acting out in the audience were competing with the graduate for attention like a small child.

That said, I have also seen families that appeared to come from underprivileged circumstances, that had a family member who had high achievements. Or the quadriplegic in a wheelchair. Cheering for those folks did not offend me, but then again it was genuine and they weren't the ones that came prepared with caned air horns.

In recent years, I've been to lots of HS graduations, some large and some small. At each ceremony, there were loud people who acted like they were at a baseball or football game. They got so loud and obnoxious that you couldn't hear the next person's name being called. In some cases, it was several persons names that were drowned out by the loud catcalls. My video recording of the ceremony is full of that nonesense. It was absolutely disruptive and irritating. I think those people should be removed or schools should go to silent ceremonies where the students receive diplomas without their names being called out. I don't think being arrested is the key, just remove them from the venue. I suspect the charges will be dropped if these folks were truly arrested. I don't want my tax dollars wasted on somebody arresting someone for classless behavior, but I certainly wish they would shut up.

A ceremony with a class of 1000 or more is a huge task. Many times the ceremony has to be completed in a set amount of time because there are several schools using the colosseum. In one case, I know of three large schools using the Tarrant County Convention Center auditorium on the same day. Disruptions/delays due to waiting for the howling relatives/friends to finish their "look at us" dances and catcalls is unacceptable.

Some of these people seem to have been raised without any supervision???I really dislike the airhorns at the events..They do hold diplomas until they turn in the cap and gowns..

Cheering doesn't bother me in the least. This is the biggest day so far as a student and it is just one ceremony a year. If it runs long, so be it. Let their families and friends have at it. Last spring we were at my son's HS graduation, sitting behind a family who were there to cheer the first HS graduate ever in their family. I cheered for and with them. When my son graduates from college I will cheer long and loudly, almost as much for my poor checkbook as for his success.
