I became a RN at the age of 49. I gave up 3 years of income to do it. I then worked 12 hour evening shifts just out side Boston. Sure I had weekends off.... I would work 7pm Sunday night, wednesday or Tuesday night then Friday night into Saturday. So I get home around 9am on Sat morning and sleep for 5 hours, get up but groggy, then on Sunday I would leave the house at 5:30 pm to be at work for 7pm. The management would say they gave me the weekend off but it wasn't true. 5-6 patients all with cardiac issues as well as multiple other issues. One bit or neglect or wrong med giving and that person is nolonger on this planet. I made 65k and never celebrated a holiday with my family.

I know exactly this feling and can beat this --- I worked here in NYS all my life, but the company I worked for 2.5 years headquartered in utah. Tech support HAD to follow MST time and the schedule was set for 3 months at a time. IF I worked days - mst would be 8-5 but here I would work 10-7 plus hr overtime. But the time I traveled home - I might spend 20 mins with my kids a day. not much to do anything. If I worked night shift - it would revert to 12 hour shifts and I would leave for work at 10pm and not get home till 1pm the next day then try to sleep for 4 hours. Did this for 2.5 years, dealing with customers across the USA daily just sucked the life outa ya. It was a struggle to juggle family, work, sleeping time and tractor seat time. Needless to say - I left that job. To this day- there is nearly a 90 % turnover rate in my position.

And as I write this I'm watching the end of a "Deadliest catch" opilio season (about 40 days) where the crew members on one boat got $151,000 for their season for catching crab. That's almost $4,000 PER DAY LEGALLY.

That's No education required. Chance of death.

Some jobs pay better than others.

Chance of death.

Also, on one of those shows, one of the captains said "100% injury rate out here" as they drove a glowing needle into his blood filled fingernail. A lot of blown out backs on that job too.

A few comments from the trenches...

The Sutter Nurses in San Francisco are set to go on strike... something like the 9th time in two years.

Many nurses have left Sutter for Kaiser and Kaiser has the best benefits.

Being a Nurse is almost as varied as there are Nurses...

I know RN's that run Hospitals and Clinics, Teach, Consult, are Public Health Nurses or School Nurses... some will become Nurse Practitioners Nurse Anesthesiologists...

I've recommended Nursing to many... most American born caucasians are not interested around here.

Asians seem to dominate and from a young age many of my colleagues were told by family and friends nursing is their future.

Several of our Nurses have married Doctors and a couple now run the practices.

I attended a wedding a couple of years ago... both bride and groom are the first from their families to graduate college... she is Filipino and a RN an he is African American and a Police Officer.

At age 24 they made over 200k plus fantastic benefits and this was in 2008...

One of my neighbors was very disappointed when her Granddaughter said she was accepted to Nursing school... Grandmother said she is so smart and why is she wasting her career being a maid...

I had a talk with Grandmother and 20 years later, Grandma couldn't be prouder of her Granddaughter... she is a supervisor and makes 150k a year and very well respected...

I personally know Bay Area Nurses working two jobs earning 200k+

My niece just graduated nursing school in the Philippines and she is looking at becoming a over seas worker. My wife is a patient care technican at the local hospital. Earns nothing close to this, but as a float pool technican, she perfers being assigned to the critical care floor where she earns about twice per hour and the patient are not combative.

Good nurses are admirable people....plus they can be very creative......

A man goes to visit his 85-year-old grandpa in hospital.
" How are you grandpa? he asks.
"Feeling fine," says the old man.

"What's the food like?"

"Terrific, wonderful menus."

"And the nursing?"

"Just couldn't be better. These young nurses really take care of you."

"What about sleeping? Do you sleep OK?"

"No problem, nine hours solid every night. At 10 o'clock they bring me a cup of hot chocolate and a Viagra tablet ... and that's it. I go out like a light."

The grandson is puzzled and a little alarmed by this, so rushes off to question the Sister in charge. "What are you people doing," he says,
" I'm told you're giving an 85-year-old Viagra on a daily basis. Surely that can't be true?"

"Oh, yes," replies the Sister. "Every night at 10 o'clock we give him a cup of hot chocolate and a Viagra tablet. It works
wonderfully well. The chocolate makes him sleep, and the Viagra stops him from rolling out of bed

Local Utiltty contracting company GPS everything one for theft and the other for production use. Was riding int he VP car and he got an automated call that said he was speeding. Crew was in Texas and a truck with an air compressor was stolen overnight Truck was chased aorunf and the air compresor was found in the thief's garage.

The Plow Cats are GPS and the VP can see production on 6 different jobs at once via overhead projector In his words it was fun for a few days. Imagine over 500 pieces of equipment in 17 states all reporting back to the mother-ship with location.

Interesting thread. My girlfriend is a RN and a Nurse Manager at one of the local hospitals with 2 Masters Degrees and five classes away from her PHD. She isn't anywhere near $136,000 a year, but of course we live in an area where $200,000 will buy you a VERY NICE house and an area with very low crime.
