You can run IP (internet protocol) phones and data on the same line. You run them on different VLANs (Virtual local area network) on the network and they never know each other is there unless one starts hogging the line. In that case you set up priorities for one or the other, but normally with voice getting the priority to insure good intelligibility.

however they set them up. they 'no worky' untill they were plugge dinto the correct color ports.

They were plugged in haphazardly all over the school. some in correctly.. and thus working.. some not.

they also had some integrated AV system in each room.... hanging projector, wall screen, crappy speaker in the ceiling, and a dvd player on the desk, and a lil small amp on desk. pc used 1 port onthe av switch.. ( vga + audio ) and the dvd player used the other.. r/l audio and video out. ( usuall r/w/y patch cable ) )

half the units they left the yellow cable unplugged from the dvd player, and no video went to the screen :)

While at school fixing my wife's room.. I fixed spanish and art's as well.

My wife actually doesn't use that chincey lil integrated thing they just put in the rooms this year.. I built her a av cart about 13ys ago, and have kept it updated with pro av gear the entire time. She's been doing full production a/v presentations in her class the entire time.. and now the school just got these overpriced clown loking units... quite comical.. :) they probably paid a mint for them too.

And yeah.. doing a major change or install the day before school? really?

AV co i work for tried that once. Decided to clean gear in a concert room night before a show.. major act.. forget who it was.. it was years ago.. maybee lou rawls. anyway.. the pretend engineer goon they sent over, broke the pins inthe mass connector on our 40ch stage snake patch box. had to rig it with paperclips to get MOST of the channels working. As the A1 that next day , coming in and finding out that bonehead maneuver right before a full show... .. lets say the stuff hit the fan.. and the boss stayed away from that room all night... anyway.. that was years ago... but sure reminds me of the joke before school started...

Hi, I'm an IT type. However, where I was we would never do what those school ITers did right before the start of school. They should have set up times for all the teachers to get computers set up on the network before school started.
There is IT and then there is IT. Theoretically (assuming that they were using Cisco gear) they should have been able to look at their stratus page and see that half the phones were offline, made a list of phones and checked them.
IT should never be seen or heard if they do their job correctly, things should "Just Work" (TM).

andf i'm not making any of that up. in fact.. if I detailed all the techincal failures and errors me and the wife and the other teachers that are her friends have had to deal with since school started.. it would work my thumbs to a nub to post them all.

the wing my wife works in is all the 'specials.. spanish, pe, art, music.. etc.

in the last month I've met all the other teachers and husbands in after hours and weekends fixing stuff the school maint people should have done.

there was a water leak int he ceiling in the spanish room.. they fixed the leak.. took downthe old ceiling tiles. left a stack of new ones on a shelf.. and did not install them.. WTF??

lil stuff like that ALL OVER

i notice all the rj45 ports in the walls have a 4 digit number on them. i do not know what network or gear they use behind the scenes.. but i know it is a constant source of problems. i kow if your pc gets moved to another port.. if you can get on t he network.. you can't get to your drives or folders or email... it's like a teacher is assigned a port or something ( i'm not an it guy.. dunno how it works.. )

pretty sad actually.

any time my wife makes an outside presentation or musical.. I bring in backline gear so it sounds and looks good. the gear the school has stinks.. though from what I hear.. they paid more for it that i can get real pro gear for.

cd player in their portable PA died... the co making the pa wanted 150$ for essentially a clamshell cd player that fits under a metal shell, and simply has wired power and headphone jacks plugged into it under cover.

a 'craig' clamshell for 19$ from CVS was the exact same size, shape,a nd had allthe right ports inthe right places.. in fact.. if you peeled the craig sticker off and swapped them.. you couldn't have told. methinks it's the smae player.. and the oe company just upcharges the school systems 7x the cost. anyway.. took me like 5m to fix it... our tax dollars at work.

now i know why you hear of 90$ screwdrivers and such..

I believe it. My brother in law's mother worked as a teacher for years (just retired this year) and I have heard similar stories from her...

Odd. Sounds like they have port security setup on the switch and something is set oddly...

I would hope that the four digit numbers on the jacks corresponds to a location on a patch panel in an equipment room somewhere or at least to the other end of the cable. That is basic cable identification. Where I worked we had an ID code that told you what rack #, patch panel #, and patch panel port #. Each wall plate had four jacks and we tried designating one for phone, LAN, video, and radio; and each function had a different color cable both in the office and the equipment room. However, that broke down slowly after a couple of years.

i remember back when my wife started at that school oh.. 15 ys ago... they had setup their broadcast room for morning announcements in the back of the media center about a year before that.

had a half way decent 'near' production grade camera, some good video switchers.. etc. small mixing console.. playback monitors... etc. actually halfway decent production setup like you might see at a small tv or radio station even.. or at least in a mobile broadcast van. some rack mounted video and audo decks.. switches.. etc.. anywho.. al that got fed to a combiner for the school so it could be added intot he schools controlled access tv system. IE.. they got a scrubbed down ver of the local cable.. many channels blocked.. and the schools channel added in.. etc... anyway.. one day the wife calls me.. media specialist can't get video out to the school from the broadcast room. local cable provider ( comcast? ) even sent a guy to look at it. he told them they had low signal coming out of the video switcher and needed a distro amp, added it and left.. video worked for 5m then went out again.

I get there and look it all over. cable plugging into distro amp had the nasties looking crimp on F connector I had ever seen. ironically it BROKE in my hand trying to take it off the amp. I pulled a new cable for them.. as it was a SHORT run anyway... then the signal was blown.. to hi of gain. pulled the distro out, went direct.. it was perfect. go figure.

poorest troubleshooting I've seen in a while... And I freely admit that video is what I have the least training in.. plenty in radio and audio.. some in video.. and even decent in telco.. but the telco tech i learned is all useless and dated now.. it's like 25yr old stuff that don't apply anymore..

Thats probably a Windows domain/network share thing. We have that setup at work. My Documents sits on the server where it gets backed up nightly instead of on the PC where it can get lost if something happens.

interesting. will try that, as chrome IS onthe pc.. I installed it. Is it an IE emulator.. or does it actually open a virtual machine / window with an instance of IE in it?
