Good info.. What you are doing by changing the batteries every fall and spring, is of course throwing away perfectly good batteries.. As he found out by putting them in a bag together so they could short out the terminals. If you wait until the smoke alarm starts chirping, the battery is nearly dead.. Of course who wants to get up in the middle of the night and change a battery. They only start chirping in the middle of the night.:) He tried to do the right thing, and he paid a terrible price for it. Alkaline batteries can deliver a lot of power, but Ni-cads even more, you can weld with ni-cads and Ni-MH batteries. Li-ion batteries can also start fires. In short batteries carry a certain danger, but we need them.

Back when I was a Boy Scout, one of my buddies got the bright idea to leave a couple of alkaline D Cells in the campfire just before taps. About an hour later we were all startled by a huge explosion and red hot embers raining down on our canvas tents. Made for a very unpleasant weekend and one very unhappy camper.
