The theory is that is if you get it directly underground, it will stink less and it will be less likely to run off when it rains.
They use it for cow manure around here (which smells much better than pig manure).

The units I have seen do not use a reel, just several hundred feet of hose being drug behind on the ground. Yes there is a large pump located at the pit pumping the liquid gold through the hose.
Another big benefit is time saved: No more hauling 3500 gallons at a time now it is an almost continuous flow being knifed in.
