(Reuters) - A widely used farm chemical used as a key ingredient in a new herbicide developed by Dow AgroSciences "possibly" causes cancer in humans, a World Health Organization research unit has determined.

The classification of the weed killer, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, known as 2,4-D, was made by the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

The IARC said it reviewed the latest scientific literature and decided to classify 2,4-D as "possibly carcinogenic to humans," a step below the more definitive "probably carcinogenic" category but two steps above the "probably not carcinogenic" category.

IARC's findings on 2,4-D have been awaited by environmental and consumer groups that are lobbying U.S. regulators to tightly restrict the use of 2,4-D, as well as by farm groups and others that defend 2,4-D as an important agent in food production that does not need more restrictions.

In March, IARC said it had found another popular herbicide -glyphosate - was "probably carcinogenic to humans." Glyphosate is the key ingredient in Monsanto Co's Roundup herbicide and other products.

IARC classifications do not carry regulatory requirements but can influence regulators, lawmakers and the public. Following the glyphosate classification, some companies and government officials moved to limit glyphosate use.

Dow AgroSciences, a unit of Dow Chemical Co, has had a particular interest in IARC's review. The company is using both glyphosate and 2,4-D in a herbicide it calls Enlist Duo that received U.S. approval last year. Enlist Duo is designed to be used with genetically engineered, herbicide-tolerant crops developed by Dow.

Dow had no comment on the IARC classification, but the company has said 2,4-D is a safe and valuable tool for agriculture.

IARC said it decided on the "possibly" classification because there was "inadequate evidence in humans and limited evidence in experimental animals" of ties between 2,4-D and cancer. It said that epidemiological studies provided "strong evidence that 2,4-D induces oxidative stress ... and moderate evidence that 2,4-D causes immunosuppression ..."

However, IARC said, "epidemiological studies did not find strong or consistent increases in risk of NHL (non-Hodgkin lymphoma) or other cancers in relation to 2,4-D exposure."

Dana Loomis, a deputy section head for IARC, said the most important studies reviewed showed mixed results, and a "sizable minority" judged the evidence as stronger than others did.

Among the research presented to IARC was an analysis funded by a Dow-backed task force that found no ties between 2,4-D and many cancers.

Some critics of 2,4-D had thought IARC would assign at least the "probably" cancer-causing classification to 2,4-D. But the Dow-backed task force said there was no reason to do so.

哲ot one health and safety regulator in the world consider 2,4-D to be a human carcinogen," the 2,4-D Research Task Force said in a statement.

Since its introduction in 1945, 2,4-D has been widely used to control weeds in agriculture, forestry, and urban and residential settings.

This is more of a political move than a scientific one. It has not been definitively proven that 2,4-D does not cause cancer because it is almost impossible to prove a negative using the scientific method. Therefore, it is possible, no matter how small that possibility is, for 2,4-D to cause cancer. The WHO has also done this with glycophosphate. Again, a political move rather than one based on sound science.

2,4-D If I remember, was developed in the early 40's. It has a good record. The BIG thing is to always look at the LD50 of a substance. Yes, I have basically taken a bath in 2,4-D to get a clog out of a tank. The same with Dursban. I am still alive. I will die of some type of cancer. Just about anything will give you cancer if you are exposed to it long enough. I work with these chemicals daily. I know the risks. The general public needs to be educated and not scared!

The general public needs to be educated and not scared!

Cancer has been doing a pretty good job both educating and scaring the general public. Its normal to be afraid of the unknown threat that will cut you (or friends or loved ones) down to an early grave. Educating the public to NOT be scared is what the producers and sellers tend to do because they want to sell the stuff. NOW.

47 million pounds of 2,4-D are spread across the countryside ( USA alone! ) every year. It's a big market and Dow wants to spread 47 million pounds across the USA in 2015 too, and 2016 and on. Maybe more and certainly not less.

No surprises here.

That it might take generations for mankind to adjust to a chemical in the food supply it's worthwhile to consider that people may become resistant to 2,4-D if it is a permanent part of our food supply. We have a few generations under our belt, maybe in a few more generations all those who can't tolerate the chemical will have died out.

If another chemical de-thrones 2,4-D then we actually have to start anew, in assessing whether people can tolerate it (over the generations). Also whatever chemical is used in place of 2,4-D may be worse than 2,4-D.

Creating and dumping billions of pounds across the countryside is a slippery slope.

Yea, well IARC is not exactly scientifically credible these days.

Same organization that classified aloe vera, being a fry cook, and jobs involving shiftwork that disrupts circadian rhythms as "probably carcinogenic".

Bunch of whackadoodles....

Toxicity is in the dose. Drink enough water and it will kill you. The biggest risk factor for cancer is age. To put it simply, the older you are, the higher your risk for cancer regardless of environmental exposure or dietary intake (3 out of 4 cancers are found in people aged 55 or older). Additionally, there over are 100 different types of cancer... On a long enough timeline, everyone's odds of survival are reduced to zero.

Usually its water in the lungs that kills people, and its rather abrupt.

Lots of ways to discredit the concern. As with cancer some folks are more susceptible to that logic than others. The risk of repeated exposure to chemicals in our food supply is a risk. Its reasonable to question it.

True. But you can also die from ingesting too much water. It has happened.

I'm sure it has. I suspect the ability to choose, and heed sensible advice could have saved those folks.

I can believe most of the chemicals we use for herbicides and probably even fungicides cause not only cancer in humans but are killing our bees.
