Browser Speed Tests

This morning I thought I'd test the claim that Opera (V6) is the world's fastest browser by testing at DSL Reports

My DSL connection is, theoretically, 640/160.

Browser - dl/ul

Netscape 4.7 - 513/134
IE 5 - 513/132
Opera V6 - 435/2

Now, while the download speed of 2 is an anomaly, the 435 (15% slower) probably is not. What speeds do you all see?

That's a line speed test, which has little if anything to do with your browser. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif (Somebody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)

If you want to test browser speed, pick a long, complicated web page somewhere and see which browser can read and render it the fastest. Right off the bat I know that Netscape has a brain-damaged way of opening and closing a separate connection for almost every component of the page, and is also real slow at rendering (figuring out how to draw) the html.

Don't know if there's a standard browser-tester page out there, but there might be. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Here's the results with IE 5.5 at work.

The throughput timing test using Server 1 showed
your actual throughput was then averaging about 800Kbps.

The second (Server 2) throughput timing test showed your
actual throughput was then averaging about 4667Kbps.

The final (Server 3) throughput timing test showed your
actual throughput was then averaging about 875Kbps.

The overall average of these tests was 2114Kbps.

Interesting. Opera is about 40% faster
