Hello all. I have a 1999 TROY-BILT hydro 16 yard tractor. It has the 16 hp Briggs Vanguard engine. The problem is that it is not charging the battery. I do not know what is wrong with it. Can anyone help who knows these engines and how they charge. Thanks. Steve

I'm not familiar with this particular tractor, but have a few suggestions you might look at.

1. Is the battery bad? A bad or shorted battery will not accept a charge.

2. Is it possible you have loose, dirty or corroded battery cables?

3. Check your connections at the rectifier and stator, maybe they vibrated loose. You should have a schematic in your parts and operating manual to locate these items.

I have found, most times, it's something small and simple when it comes to electrical problems.

Good luck!

Steve, check your ground cable also. Make sure it has a good connection where it bolts to
the tractor frame. If you have a tester, turn it to DC volts & check the voltage across the
battery terminals. It should read around 13.5 to 14 volts. Keep the engine reved up when
checking. If you get this reading, the charging system is ok. Let us know what you find
out.

Steve, the other guys have already answered, but just in case you didn't know it, you can go to http://http:www.BriggsAndStratton.com and print out an illustrated parts list for just about any Briggs engine. I've done that for all 3 of mine.
