Troy bilt horse transmission

I am trying to replace the wheel shaft on my horse tiller and i done have
everything took out but the wheel shaft with the high gear clutch and low gear.
I can not get the high speed gear to turn free so i can line up the key ways so
the shaft can come out but the low speed gear i can get to turn free. How can i
try and get the High Speed gear to turn with out the shaft turning to. Please i
need help

Its been a few years since I replaced a wheel shaft but I think all you have to do is put the hi-low wheel speed lever on the back in neutral. The dog clutch is connected to the wheel shaft by the key and when you put the machine in neutral the clutch slides to the center of the two gears, frees both gears and you can turn either by hand to line up with the key in the clutch and the shaft should come right out. Getting it back in can be a real pain. This is how I did it on an 84 horse.
