Jeff:
I live in Summit Point - just across the WV border from Berryville. My neighbor put up a 3 board fence last year. I'll ask him this weekend what his costs were. He did it himself and it looked pretty easy. He starded doing the post holes with one of those one-man gas powered augers and it was taking him a good long time to do the holes. I had rented a Bobcat with an auger for my pole barn project so I let him use it and he finished up about 25 holes in about an hour. This project would be a good reason to get a post hole digger for your tractor! He did some of the fence boards himself but they went alot quicker when I or another neighbor helped - lifting, leveling and nailing 16' long 5/4" oak boards alone is not a good plan. Also, we found it important to pre-drill the fence boards to avoid spliting. The system we eventually ended up with was line up the board, pre-drill, nail thru pre-drilled hole with a nail gun then trim off the wild tail even with the center of the fence post with a chain saw.
There is a mill up route 11 North from Winchester almost to the Fairgrounds where Old Charles Town road meets 11 - I think it's called Valley Lumber but I might be wrong. They mill and sell fence boards there. When I get ready to do my fence, I planned to check there for price.
When I get ready to by my post hole digger, I'm going to look at Highway Tractor on route 7 between Berryville and Winchester - that's where I got my rake for a good price. I'm also going to look at Borher's Auction yard on route 51 near Innwood to see if they've got a decent one used.
By the way, any idea what they use to make the fence black? Paint?, Stain?, Oil?
Best of luck on your fence.
