My hometown had a town dump up till the 70's, you just threw stuff out over the hill. Wasn't a landfill or anything with a liner, etc. Far as I know it's still there, just not open anymore.

It was owned and ran by the city and known as the city dump. It's been closed for many years. We had another one like it not to far from where I live that was closed a few years back by the EPA and declared a Toxic waist site and super funds were used to clean it up at a cost of somewhere around 5 to 7 million dollars. This one was several times larger than the city dump and was owned and operated by a private individual. It was just a tremendously wide long extremely deep hollow between two big hills where for a small fee anybody and everyone dumped anything and everything for 60 or 70 years.

We have a problem in this county with illegal dumping .
The harder and more expensive the law makes it for people to dispose of their trash the more illegal dumps are created .

Thats very much true. With the prices of fuel now Its hard for folks at the far end of the county to drive near my house to the county landfill. I have to turn folks back every day from the one dad and I run for a privtte business. The EPA wont let us take from the public unless its brush. it2 20 miles one way to the county dump and we are at the very end of the county. I think since we are slowthe owners of the businesses may apply for an open permit. We cant take any household as one coke bottle orr can will cost 5000 dolars if not picked out. As for the home dump site I dig in all the ones I find. I found an old Singer sowingmachine a friend gave me 75 bucks for and restored it. lots can be learned from them.
