Hello from CT-
I am trying to discourage my "friendly neighbor" to stay off my property which borders his. I have a large driveway that leads to a wood lot next to my house and cant keep this guy out, have tried signs, ropes, and they drive rite over. Talked with local authorities, lawyer and still not getting them to stay off! Any good ideas on how to work this out ?

Have you considered a 3 strand bob wire fence and a gate with a lock?
I had similar issues...while I was building my fence my neighbor was standing there watching saying I hate to see you do that.

Grainger,

Have you been direct with him and told him your wishes? Or just indirectly, (police, etc), someone else tell him? Usually doing so in a direct and confrontational manner is what some people understand the best.

And my response would have been, "I hate to do it but some people don't respect other people's property." But I would likely have just bitten my tongue. :D At least if I was smart. Sometimes I is sometimes I is not. :D

Find out the legal requirements to post your land.
Do so.
If you see anyone on your land call the law enforcement.
Prosecute if the LEO catches them on your posted land.
In some states YOU can got to the magistrate and get a warrant issued if you witness the crime and know the offender. Twould be a good idea to have pictures of the trespass to help your case if this route is open to you.

I have had a few trespassers. A one way conversation with two poachers and they have not been back. A guy on an ATV in the same spot ran off when I yelled at him. There is now a couple strands of wire on T Post which will have to do until I get a proper fence built.

If'n they are going to be an a... they will be a problem no matter what you do. So you just have to keep at 'em. The wifes family has a problem with trespassers. They put up a gate which got promptly torn down. If I lived near them I would build a gate that would be real hard to tear up. One would think my BIL would do something since he is there and does not work much. But its likely his friends doing the trespass in the first place.

Later,
Dan

This is almost exactly what I did say. But I sort of inferred that I was talking about a recent AWOL army guy who thought it was OK to pitch his tent on my place. Since I am an absentee owner I am trying to stay friendly with my neighbor as best I can. He did frost my jets a little by telling me how nice he thought my camp ground was...he even joked about going back there and having a party. It's 1/4 mile back in the woods down my old logging road.

Since I put my gate in I haven't had any trouble at all (knock, knock). I have even left some tempting things there to see if they would disappear. So far, so good.

He probably thinks '"Those signs and ropes can't possibly be meant for me, we are good neighbors". I would be direct, some people just wont get it any other way, and even then some still wont get it, but you won't know this untill you try. If it was me I would start out the conversation something like this, the next time it happens or at the next available opportunity: "Here is the deal, I will do everything in my power to keep from disturbing you and respect your privacy, by not trespassing on your property. But unfortunatly, I am going to demand the same courtesy from you. Your continuing to invade my privacy and tresspass on my property is very disturbing to me and is making it hard to be a good neighbor. I really don't want to do it, but if you don't stop, I WILL be documenting it and calling the authorities."

There is also an old saying. " Good fences make good neighbors" A heavy physical barrier might also help them to get the idea.

Good Luck
