Does anyone have any links or thoughts on getting a 3 bay 1 and 1/2 story barn designed and built. I'm thinking I want a rought cut frame with large timbers, but everything I've googled for timberframe barns is insamely priced.

I don't want "handcrafted wooden pegs that are gently hand fit into each joint and caressed into place"

I want big timbers, big nails, and probably some steel bracing. I'm looking to build something along the lines of 24' (or 30') by 40(up to 45).

I'm figuring that if I can get the frame up, and roofed I can finish everything else myself as time allows. This will be built on a slab if that helps

Thanks,

Mike

A number of years ago in an add in Countryside mag I ordered a plan set from a company that designs outbuildings. The plans were sufficient enough to satisfy the building inspector regarding the sadety of the barn andI built it myself. The plans were very easy to understand and i believe they cost around $20. You might look for something like this in a mag if you are inclined to build something yourself.

I used beams from an old barn I took down and a lot of the outside boards. I had to buy some new rough cut lumber form the local Amish sawyer but I think in the end I had less than $500 in the building, including roofing.

The sand creek stuff is nice, but I think it's way out of my price range.

The 3 stall animal barn on the barns barns barns site looks about like what I need, now I need to price it!

I built a 24 x 36 on a slab from rough cut Hemlock, with vertical shiplap pine siding. It's set up with two stalls on the right, a pass through center aisle and my 12 x 24 workshop on the left.

I did start with a set of plans I ordered online, but did cheat and use Gambrel Attic trusses.

Here are a few pic's. My brother in law and I built the bulk of the frame in a week. With the crane on the delivery truck and a few other buddies were able to install all the trusses in 4 hours.

I built a 24 x 36 on a slab from rough cut Hemlock...

Bearhawk - If I may be so bold, what is the rough cost of doing your slab. Trying to decide between a slab or a pole building with a poured floor... Boy, the costs of the foundation are high!

Good Mornin Guys,
KentT thanks for that link and Bearhawk thanks so much for posting those fine barn pics ! I just resently got a price quote from a company in Ny, Conestoga Buildings on a 28' by 48' pole barn, 12 ft walls and storage on second floor. The building is all metal including the roof with full insulation. Two 10' garage doors one entry door and a full partition inside the building. No concrete, that would be my problem. The cost I got was $37,700 which is way over my budget. I would like to do something similiar to what one of the other posters mentioned, get the building rough assembled and then do the finish work myself ! I was hoping to get something erected in the $30,000 range. And then paycheck things like the insulation and wiring, heating etc...

Kent I did send away for the catolugue on the link you posted...

Thanks for the info ! :)

BTW I forgot to mention that there was 6 windows in that quote also !

That is a great looking barn Bearhawk.
Our pole building when quoted for floor even 20 years ago was over 10K. Sugar sand floor turns to power after a few years making it very difficult with it getting into everything like desert silt.

An alternative is crushed recycled concrete which settles in pretty solid and is very reasonable. Later, if solid concrete is funded, then you have perfect base.
There is also the crushed asphalt that works well.

I don't know off hand what pressure treated 9x9 posts go for now, but our pole barn was 14' at bottom of truss. I suspect they were in 4'.
An insulated portion within is necessary for service.

After working on aircraft for years, I might do a hanger style next time.
The counterweighted bifold door was also used as a crane to pick up aircraft engines and other odd items. Surprised as well, but a cool tool.
There was also office area built above within the steel rafters, but was somewhat awkward ducking the cross braces.
