I need a second opinion on what's the best way to treat my well water. Water sample results:

FE 18
PH 7.0
Hardness 6
TDS 140
MN 0

Not sure what these numbers really mean. I have no clue how bad it is... One big problem is the high iron content. How do I tell it's soluble or insoluble iron??? When I fill up a bucket, the water looks orange/brownish color. Looks like very light tea. Let it sit for a while, I can see it accumulate at the bottom.
Anyone here have high iron in their water? How high is yours? How do you deal with it? Is the a more practicle and low cost method to remove iron from water? The company who did the testing trying to sell me a $5000 filtration system. I also found lots of iron removal system with a google search. I'm totally new to this. Your help is really appreciated.

Looks like you have slightly hard water. We have a lot of iron in our water too.

All we use a simple whole house filter (change every 4 months) and then a water softener (about 14 bags of salt per year).

The water tastes good, a million times better than the nasty chlorinated city water.

How high is the iron in your water? A friend of mine said the same thing. He said I can go to lowes and get a whole house filter and a water softener. The cost would be around $500 if I do it myself. $500 and $5000 is a huge difference. I'm a little skeptical because the water guy sounds like a high pressure saleman. He came with glass jar and a mini filteration system to demonstraded the process.

I got iron water too,and some sulpher, but plenty of it,but mine don't look cloudy like yours, mine is clear looking anyways. Gave up wearing white tee shirts years ago,Stains about anything.Does yours stain? if not it might not be your problem.

Only thing I got is a whole house filter on,and I use a brita filter pitcher for drinking water, that works fine for drinking if you change the whole house one about every 6 weeks.

Don't think one of those salt water sofeners will help you[if yours is iron water],they do make systems that are for iron water.

My hot stinks with the sulpher, cold has no oder.

Next time I get a hot water heater, going to either take that anode out or get one that helps with this problem[at least I heard this was the way to go?],anybody know anything about that?

But,like I said, got plenty of it[I guess, neighbors well went dry, mine didn't,his was good tasting water unfiltered. So,would rather have mine than his!

For the iron - a greensand filter (this is not the only option)
for any sulpher smell, a bubbler (to force air through the water, and vent it outdoors)

a softener will remove iron, but it is very hard on the media. Also, if you have a softener, you should have a dedicated tap for drinking water, or a small r-o filter under the sink. All that salt is said to be bad for you.

Ask three water treatment companies, and you will get three different solutions to your problems. Try budgetwater.com

When I bought this property I had problems with water including iron. I took a sample to a water softener company and they checked it and told me what settings I needed and sold me a softener for under $500. 5G's NO WAY!!
Have you ran the water long enough to make sure it's not your pipes?
Iron/hard water is treatable and if you have sulfur smell then you need an Aerator too. It sprays the water in a large tank (300 gal) and then pumps fresh water to the house.
I run my drinking water through a carbon icemaker filter and it tastes great.

I do not know the iron content in my water, apart from that it does look orange/brown and tastes metallic. My soil in the yard is the same colour.

I have a Kenmore filter, works great, around $50.
The Culligan franchises do sell good water softeners, a basic one will be $2000 installed. You can spend different amounts, depending on how often you need it to charge, whether you want to run at a set time, whether you want it to detect when it needs to be run. Mine just runs after so many hundred gallons.

Dadsgreenpsd, A water softener adds very little salt into your water, if any, you can not taste it. You can use potassium too if you want, think that costs more to run though.

Absolutely true, we could not taste it at all. However, my wife drinks a lot of water, and I decided that the small r-o (under $200) was the best way to go. Better to be safe than sorry in the long run. Many softener companies will tell you that softened water is completely safe, but do a search online for health effects of softened water. Potassium was an option, but at almost twice the cost, it was made up quickly with the r-o :D
