Default Re: Supressor for 10/22

We were out sighting in my XP100 today with a new scope and my friend had his contender and Ruger Charger (same action as 10/22 but in reargrip handgun) with his suppressor. He also has one for his 300 Whisper, the various 22's and a 45. Talked to him a bit about what he thought about them. The ones made for a 22 are usually lighter and shorter than one made for something like a 223. There is a formula they use to figure the size the suppressor, it needs to be based on total bore area of barrel and I think he said the chamber to make the expansion chamber preceeding the disks and spacers in the suppressor.

He uses CCI standard velocity in his 22's which fall below the sonic level by a few fps. Any subsonic ammo he's tried was a bit quieter but also was far less stable at any extended distance. We shot quite a few rounds without any hearing protection today and pretty much all you could hear was mostly the cycling of the action and the ting on the distant steel targets we were shooting. We normally shoot very small circles at 200+ meters and the suppressor doesn't hurt accuracy at all.

The CCI standard velocity ammo falls just below the speed of sound at our location but he did say in some areas due to other factors it may be above the speed of sound and you may get that crack. I think he said on his chrono this ammo was 1237 fps. Most of his 22's are threaded and he just spins it off and onto another easily. He did mention an interesting thing, he can screw even the 45 or the 30 cal can onto his 22 and it still keeps it nearly as quiet as the one made for his 22s.

Thought I'd pass this along since we got to play with it today.

CBs are a subsonic load and are much quieter. They used to be available as either Shorts or Longs but I am not sure they still are. I believe either has similar if not the same velocity, but the longs are good for cycling through magazines. Longs also place the bullet closer to the rifling, and don't expose the chamber to the gases and lead like shorts do. I use Shorts in all of my 22LRs though, and have never had any problems other than needing to use them single shot. If you have a weak extractor, and you don't clean your chamber after shooting shorts, you could have a problem extracting Long or Long Rifle ammo if the chamber is fouled.

CB's are a type of short. in fact, they don't have any powder in them at all.
17 grain bullet and primer is all that powers them.
yes, they are very quiet - but they don't have much range and will not cycle the bolt in a 10/22.
as to not shooting shorts in a .22lr receiver -- you can do it, just brush out the chamber real good before loading .22lr in it or they may not seat correctly. (lever and bolt guns often come with S, L,or LR printed on the receiver, so it must be OK to "mix" ammo in them)

Ive used cb ammo for years....mostly to keep the red squirrel population in check. They seem to be effective on squirrels out to abut 25 yards. The noise made when shooting cb's compares to my air rifle. I use it at my lake cabin.....and the neighbors never know I am doing "squirrel control".

I shoot the cb's out of an old Winchester falling block, single shot.....that I picked up at a gun show many years back. That old winnie is a tack driver....and prolly my favorite rimfire to shoot. I wish somebody would make that model again. Great gun for teaching kids!!

OH.....and I just found some CB's at our local Wal Mart the other day. Added a box of 100 (?) to my cart....and never looked at the price.

I had to look it up, but CCI does still make CB and CB Long ammo. Both are the same load with a 29 gr bullet at 710fps. CB Longs would be easier to handle and cycle.
Keep in mind I am talking about CB ammo. There is also high velocity Short, Long, and Long Rifle, as well as standard velocity (target type) Long Rifle ammo. Don't confuse CB ammo with the other.

I understand what you're saying but I don't plan to "hunt" but rather to exterminate. Whether it is squirrels, rats, moles, or crows.

I've shot the CBs from a 10/22 a long time ago and they were very quiet and used a smaller bullet.

CB Longs sound worth trying. 710fps is the speed of an air rifle but with a 29gr bullet. It must have a much longer reach than an air rifle?

Brushing out the chamber isn't that easy, tight quarters, the bolt doesn't allow much room.

doesn't matter for what reason you are taking game.. it's gonna be classified as hunting.

I'd feel awfully stupid if I had an nfa device seized because i didn't read the FFC handout...

You're right SG. If it is illegal to kill wildlife with a suppressed weapon and if I did it then I would be breaking the law. I would have to weigh risks and benefits.

If you shoot squirrel or rats, thats hunting? What about mice, can we trap them?
