Photos: Are these coyote, or fox pups?

I was sure these were coyote pups when I took the photos.

It was at dusk, 8:40pm, near darkness. They looked gray to brown.

We hear a lot of coyote howling, other wild screams at night, and something here digs up gophers right out of their tunnels.

Now looking at the photos these look more like fox pups.

Anybody know?

I have posted some photos. Anybody have a positive ID for these?

Coyote or Fox? - album

(The last photo shows a dug-up gopher run, with a glove to indicate the size. These excavations are everywhere).

Look like fox to me.

Having worked in the woods growing up and in the field for a long time, I definitely feel those aren't fox as many of them as I have seen scurrying around the corners between the woods and the corn rows. A fox full grown isn't much bigger than those pups are now. The next to last picture gives it away. See the muzzle? To round and fat to be a fox. A fox is small and pointed. Plus their hair is much more wispy on a fox. These "dogs" are much more husky than any fox I have ever seen. A fox is more cat like than dog like in appearance than what these pups look like.

I couldn't have said this better. The head on a coyote is more squared or block like than a fox. And foxes move more like a cat than a canine. I would never mistake a coyote for a fox. I do sometimes have trouble telling a coyote from a dog at long distance. Until I see the coyote break in to a trot. There is no question then.

Thanks everybody!

I also asked a friend who is a wildlife biologist at DFG (California Dept of Fish & Game). After consulting with a whole office of wildlife specialists she reported back definitely coyote.

Considering that opinion plus the posts above, I'm convinced now that these are coyote pups.

Both the 4th and 5th picture makes me think coyote. Seem too big for young fox and the side profile sure looks like a coyote.

Well to be honest, most people mistake my Australian Shepherd for a fox...
