We have been collecting logs from around the neighbourhood - semi-urban logging...
This is the biggest to date - about 36" at the butt. The mill will only handle 26" max. We will probably trim with a chainsaw and finnish on the mill. There appears to be a little rot in the centre...

What kind of tree is that? The butt looks nice, but that top is rather ugly. I'd be tempted to cut the top back to 1 stem, then saw backwards to pare it down to fit on the deck. Yet you know what your mill can do.

Have fun.

It's a pine and we are thinking the same thing... have't completed a ring count yet.

I know a few sawyers that wouldn't touch logs like that. Trees from an urban setting are likely to contain nails and other foreign material that is hard on saw blades.

Nails, clothesline pulleys, other "unique" things... I went on one mill tour that the sawyer told about hitting an electrical insulator that was like an explosion.

You list enough equipment to support it... do you mind if I ask what you have for a mill?

You could drive the chainsaw blade in it few times, fill it with black powder and split it with the explosion - bang! and ready for the sawmill:thumbsup:

I was thinking about a pine in my back yard this morning, that was too big for the cutter (shear) to handle, and nowhere to drop it with a saw (buildings), so they left it 10 years ago. Might need to find somebody that can cut it up before I drop it, so it doesn't go to waste.

I know a fellow, who looks like he fell off a mountain, that has a been sawing for years with a band mill. He does the big logs like you said, some saw kerfs, some gun powder, a little cannon fuse and some mud to seal the kerf. I have an LT 30 band mill, but I have not felt the urge to try that procedure myself, but it does work.
