1st - CONGRATULATIONS! What a great feeling to have a paid off home. The fact that it's a beautiful paid off home makes it even better.
2nd - I read your description of the original house and upgrades several times. I'm making an assumption, but the loan you just paid off wasn't the original $28k note, was it? I figure you've refinanced one or more times while doing your upgrades. Doesn't matter. . . it's still a great accomplishment and you are to be commended. I built my house in 2001/2002 and got a 15 yr note after a substantial down payment. I have 5-1/2 years to go on my note at 5% interest. I have looked at refinancing, but only owe a bit over $50k total and the interest saved wouldn't be that much advantage. I'd have to go through the complete refinancing hassle and only come out about $500 ahead after all my closing and points charges. I'll leave it like it is and avoid ulcers.
