Pump - Trash or Semi-Trash

Found what seems to be a good buy on CL for a 3" Semi-Trash pump from NorthStar.

Primary use would be pond draining, silt removal and possibley watering from the pond.

Other then the slightly larger "trash" size (only 1/2" differance) between the two pumps are there any other considerations? TIA

As far as I know, the trash pumps will pass a larger solid than a semi trash. The ability to pass such objects is traded off for effective pumping - a semi trash should have slightly higher discharge pressure and rate than the same size trash pump all else being equal. Either pump should have seals capable of service in dirty or silty water - unlike a common water pump.

High dollar trash and semi trash pumps may also have abrasion resistant lining on the inside of the housing rather than bare cast iron.
