My neighbor was bailing his wheat straw this afternoon and something caught the straw on fire. Luckily the fire department was able to get it under control in only a few minutes. We were worried it would start a forest fire and get out of control. There was another straw fire a few miles south of us at the same time.

It's been over a month since we have had any rain so things are very dry.

I am glad it did no harm. What does the fire department use for water in your area --- I am assuming there are no convenient hydrands available.

I am sincerely glad that the fire was contained in a short length of time. Do your local firefighters utilize Tanker trucks?

There are underground water storage tanks near populated areas and they use local lakes and streams to refill their pumper trucks.

The pumper will set up at the nearest creek/lake while the tanker truck races back and forth to the fire site. At the fire site they inflate a swimming pool and empty the tanker's contents in the pool which hopefully lasts until the taker can return to refill.

We had a field about 8miles from my house catch fire, probably started by some idiot throwing a cigarette but out of their car around the end of May. It burned a few acres but nothing was damaged other than the field. It took the fire departments about 3 hours to get it controlled and out.

I remember a show on RFD TV when a guy talked about how few very old hay balers were still around because they used wood for the bearings and if they didn't keep them greased they would catch fire and burn the hole machine to the ground!
I doubt there were adequate fire departments back then so you lost your machine and probably the crop too.

Makes me want to reconsider keeping my 1965 Pumper/Tanker fire truck w 1000gal tank. Glad to hear the FD was able to knock it down.

I went and checked out the burned area this evening. Looked like around 8 acres of straw and a few hundred feet of dry grass along the fence line burned. Neighbor was not sure how it started. He thinks it may have been hot exhaust from his pickup. We are lucky there was only a light wind today.

More than likely if the truck has a catalytic converter and he drove through tall grasses. Converters get IIRC over 1000* and have that big flat surface too.
I have parked on cut grass and had my truck idling for about 30 minutes, a couple days later there was a large spot of dead grass!!
