Went out yesterday morning and this guy was stretched out across the barn door. He's about 4 feet long give or take a little. Didn't have much time to look as the dogs scared him. By the time I got the camera out, just part of his tail was showing. Very pretty guy, & great for rodent control. I've had them here from 2' to over 6'.

He had been here at least 3 days, dog's were alerting on him 2 days ago, tried to find out what it was. But he was well hidden. Since there was no rattling I moved grass & weeds around, with no luck.

We have a pond separating me from my brother in law's house. He has killed 2 water moccasins this year, one of which got into his house and was under a bed in a spare bedroom. He had crawled across a glue trap and was stuck luckily. All the snakes seem to be crawling north instead of south, at least so far.

Basically in this part of the world, if it does not rattle there is no worry. There are a couple of other poison snakes, but they are very rare.
There is a Poison Lizard "Gila Monster". Have never seen on on my place. Have seen them about 1/2 mile away.

Not so many snakes since getting 2 outside dogs.

It almost looked like a coral snake at first glance, but wrong colors. My Aunts dog was killed by a coral snake in Texas last summer in their backyard, but that guys should be great for keeping the mice out of your Barn!

Probably means it will be a hot summer

I swear the wooly worms/caterpillars around here all cross the roads going in the same direction. I don't know what it means.

Yep it's a king snake, I do like to have them around. Hope it stays.
Don't think there are any coral snakes in this area. Some a little south of here, But they only get about as big around & as long as lead pencil. Very shy near impossible to find even if your looking for them.

My rodents, birds, lizards & snakes have more to worry about.
Road Runners are building a nest just south of the house. Twice yesterday 1 went by with a mouth full of dog fur. Have see 1 of them twice today, just came to bug the quail & maybe an easy meal. It just sort of pecked at the quail, not in "I'm gona Eat you" sort of way. May try to find the nest, never seen a Road Runners nest.

Well, I saw my first snake of the year this morning about 10:30 a.m. We have a city park about a mile and a quarter from our house. It has a little fishing pond and a very heavily wooded area with lots of trails through the woods, grass, and weeds. The trails are for hikers, bicycle riders, even horseback riding; just no motorized vehicles. Over a year ago, I saw a big black snake, maybe 4' long near the fishing pond, but I'm sure it was a non-poisonous water snake of some kind. And that's the only snake I've seen in the park until this morning. But today it was about a 2' long Copperhead; first poisonous snake I've seen in quite a few years. And our little Chihuahua walked right past it without seeing it.

I guess I better start being more observant. I talked to a lady in the city's Recreation Department and she said they've had several reports of snakes this year, including a girl bitten by a water moccasin.
