Just because I like to think the best of people until proven otherwise.
(I also like tilting windmills... :p)

For all of my 56 years and beyond, my father has been the "go-to" guy whenever somebody needed help; a driveway plowed, a car pulled out of the ditch, somebody to stay with an elderly neighbor who fell and broke her leg on the ice until the ambulance gets there...

Now he's not as young as he used to be... as physically fit as many people 20 years younger than him, but Alzheimer's is catching up to him. For the past couple years my mother seems amazed at how some of the "new" neighbors are willing to help out if needed for no reason. Every time she brings it up, I tell her that what goes around comes around.

That's my story. Are there any other positive tales out there, or is the world truly going to H$$$ in a hand basket?

By and large, the world is not 'going downhill fast'. According to the 'world view' and umpteen bad-neighbour stories/situations, here on TBN, I live in either a throw-back era or Brigadoon. My neighbours all all great, we help each other when needed without living in each others pocket. My house remains un-locked and a deal is made with a handshake. I consider it idyllic in this mostly rural State of Tasmania.

However, it's what you put into the community (and the resulting reputation that you receive) that defines it. For the most part, I'm the one who offers/volunteers first whilst rarely requesting... it's in my nature and, yes, I've been burnt or taken advantage of at times. Yet that doesn't discourage me from doing it again.

Short story; I buy my rounds of hay from a family who run a beef/sheep operation in Pyengana (20kms away, as the crow flies). Last year I offered myself & my tractor to help during the haying season... not for free hay but because I'm retired and, hey = tractor FUN! They initially thought I was 'off my meds' but accepted. I had fun during the fortnight needed to bring it all in.

A month or so after, 7 rounds of hay gets dropped off and they won't take my money for it... turns out that my fortnights fun saved them a further fortnights work. I felt embarrassed accepting the hay.

People are generally good.

They really should be a like button on here!

We've had a bunch. After a storm the whole neighborhood is helping each other out to get cleaned up. Now that I live closer to the city there is less of that, but people still offer help and i find myself helping a lot. I don't ask for money or anything, but often folks find nice ways to thank you. I plowed a bunch of people out after a blizzard and we had cakes and meals for a month afterwards!

I may be getting more and more cynical but after 35 years of moving every 3-5 years I have seen a lot of neighbors, I can say my current neighbors are not as friendly as 30 years ago. I am one of the "umpteen bad-neighbor story" posters, as I have two "bad" neighbors. One always seem to think I owe him something for no reason (stiffed me on work payment, said I did not need the money), the other lets his dogs run free which I am good with but they run my property and one dug under my goat fence and my LGDs killed it (they sued).

Now as bad as they are, I have one good one that makes up for both of them, he is just good people.

On the 23rd of June I had a triple bypass. For anybody that's had this, did you have the feeling something was wrong, and you need to make plans?
When I went to the ER and they kept me everything on my farm was taken care off. I had trained one of my boarders to take over. Including using the tractor to put out hay and receive feed pallets. She even made sure the house trash cans made it up to the road.
The amount of friends I found out that I have really surprised me. 2 friends from work came over and dug up and fixed a leaking water line that was coming right off the well and making the pump run.
Then the president of the hunt club came by one day and fixed the roof on my barn. The roof on the cupola blew off in a storm while I was in the hospital.
Then another friend stopped by one day and dug my potatoes. The girls did a good job tending the garden but the potatoes were too much for them.
Then I had several friends who took turns coming by and taking me for walks. Just people coming to visit means a lot when your house bound.
This is the first week that I have fed up by myself. It has been incredible all the help and care I have had the last 3 months. Even the guy that I buy hay from has been understanding and extended my line of credit until I can pay him off.

Thanks for the well wishes Murph. The dr gave me permission on the 27th of July to drive the mule. I didn't ask about the tractor. With a little help I was able to get on it. My horse misses me.

I have always been very fortunate, I have always been blessed with great neighbor's. I really don't know why.
