I noticed in another thread (concealed carry - how many magazines), that there are some knowledgeable 1911 people here. I have always wanted a 1911 but for some reason when I went to buy one I ended up with a Springfield XDM 4.5 .45acp instead. 13 plus 1 capacity. It is a nice gun, especially after the PRP trigger job and the Truglow night sights but it is not a 1911.

I am particularly interested in the Springfield Range Officer Compact. Does anyone here have any experience with one?

Thanks

You can spend as much as you want on a 1911, or build one from scratch, and there's 70 and 80 series that have some differences. Ruger and Remington have some nice products, but Springfield and Colt are almost synonymous with the gun. They are reliable and a snap to field strip and keep clean. I always suggest people pick their dollar amount and do some research. I started out wanting the Springfield and ended up with the Remington R1 by a hair over the Ruger, and got a lot of bang for the buck. There are a lot of really nice products out there--everyone has a hand in the 1911 market, and the aftermarket is enormous if there's changes you ever want to make.

I would suggest you visit a couple of the 1911 websites for user comments. I bought a Colt Defender (3" barrel) a few years ago. The scuttlebutt then was that that 3" model was reliable, but the others were not. Shorter barrels are temperamental in the 1911 world. Things might have changed since then. I also have a Colt compact model (3 1/2" barrel). I'm not particularly impressed with it. The commander size (4" barrel) and standard size (5" barrel) apparently work well for just about everybody.

Looked at some last night. Really liked the feel of the Ruger. But I don't remember the model number. It was full sized with I think a 5" barrel. It was at academy sports.

A heavy pistol that is single action ..... two things I don't prefer in a handgun.
