Federal Judge Dismisses Suit Against 'Drone Slayer'

I'm a drone plot and seeing posts like this really are upsetting (maybe not for what you'd think)

Most drones have fisheye cameras on them that would require then to be nearly humping your leg to get a decent photo of you.

The drones that can carry actual cameras cost thousands of dollars. No one that spends that much money on a drone plus thousands of dollars on a camera and lens that can take pictures of you from a far truly cares Wtf you are doing.

If someone wanted a picture of you a flying noise maker is a little obvious, don't you think?

The thing that really gets me though is that people seem to be so upset about these incapable drones invading their privacy (even willing to get their firearms out for a cause they believe in) when almost everything you type online and every website you go to is tracked and more. Something that violates your privacy on a multiple factor level compared to these toys and yet there aren't any firearms calling for net neutrality.

Off my soapbox now, but seriously, fight the fights that matter. If the drone is flying at ground level at your windows, by all means shoot the thing down and beat the snot out of the pilot.

When I read posts like this I get freaked out that there are people like you that think it's okay to be a peeping tom. GET REAL! It's NOT okay to fly your drones over your neighbors property without permission.

Personally, I'm concerned about the "slippery slope" - 15 years ago, webcams were complete crap and could barely tell you who someone was at your door. Today, you can get 4k GoPros.

People who are not concerned about slippery slopes are just stupid, in the same manner as the ostrich.

I don't care what your drone can do today; I'm going to assume that it's got perfect vision like a human, and if it's on my property looking towards me, I'm going to assume that it can see really well. It's not my job to determine if it's got a nice camera or not - it shouldn't be invading my privacy.

Bingo.

Not saying it's ok at all. I'm all for protecting your rights and your property.

I'm saying that if someone truly wanted to be a peeping Tom, flying something that can has a strong contrast in the sky (easy to see), sounds like a small lawn mower (easy to hear) and ignoring that it's probably a crappy camera, doesn't sound like a successful way to accomplish the goal of being a peeping Tom.

Again, I fully agree that it is not ok to fly over property that isn't yours. But I feel that these conversations are taken to the extreme and common sense is lost.

Not a valid analogy at all. When I use the internet I am the one putting my data out there understanding all risks and caveats. A drone flying over my property and taking pictures has nothing to do with what I chose to make public.

Please also consider the information that is collected that isn't so obvious. If you carry a cell phone, where you go and how long you are there is captured and recorded. Did you choose to let that information about you be captured and used?

This analogy is very valid. It isn't about what you choose to release online vs drones taking pictures of your property that you don't want taken. In BOTH situations, it is about an expectation of privacy.

You expect to not be photographed at home. Totally understandable and worth fighting for. But let's not jump to conclusions and say that every drone that you see in the sky is for nefarious uses.

You SHOULD expect not to be tracked and followed online but you are. You SHOULD expect not to have data collected about you like where you go, what you purchased, how long you were there, what you search for, recording conversations, etc.

Your expectation of privacy when using electronic devices is low. Should it be? Net neutrality and freedom should be fought for as hard if not harder than a potential threat because this IS happening to you and me and everyone right now. But no one is waving guns in the air demanding change.

We are more concerned with potential threats to our privacy, in drones, when we should be more concerned about actual ongoing threats to our privacy online and electronic devices.

One cannot conceivably reach through the internet and slap an online voyeur or punch them or give their collection device a blast from a 12 gauge no matter how much they might like to do so.

Neither can one get their hands on a telemarketer who is robo dialing as much as they might want to.

However, at least conceivably to many people they can 'reach out and touch' the perceived voyeur pilot operating the drone. Plus it's more personal and an affront to personal privacy when one can actually see the violator ' in real life'.

I think I mentioned this already, but, worth repeating, Google has applied for permission to offer real time video. I'm guessing they'll get that permission. My drone would have to be within 100ft of you to get the same quality pics.

Does this apply to news drones? How about drones used to video a municipality? How about Gmaps?

See how complicated this gets?? No argument, just raising points. :)

It all boils down to the expectation of privacy. If you are walking down a street, you have a reasonable expectation that someone will not violate you personally, but it's not reasonable to expect that someone will not take a picture in a public place...as long as they don't use it to make money at your expense. A drone taking pictures for a map is not likely to be taking pictures of your wife sunbathing nude, and they don't want or need pictures like that.
