If anyone is within driving distance of Lyndeborough, NH feel free to stop by (you can even help too /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) next weekend as we take apart my big barn. Don't worry - it will be getting repaired (and a number of timbers replaced) before we put it back up in 2 years. LOTS of tractor time on this project and lots more to come. Details at www.cwrmarketing.com/barnproject I will be real busy with the project so call or use the barn email (on the website) to reach me.

What a fascinating project Andy.

The picture of the bad joint and iron patch reminded me of the clubhouse that's about five years old north of the Texas Motor Speedway. They wanted the timber frame look for the main dining room. So they built trusses out of large beam cedar. Except for the iron connectors, exposed fasteners, and poor fit up, it looks timber frame.

All things are not as they appear evidently. There are now two bys scabbing over joints. The trusses are giving way. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

There is a difference between doing it right and doing it where it looks right.
