A good black and tan coon hound wouldn't be much good against deer because a good coonhound is supposed to be broke off deer. My little Jack Russell has been running the deer out of the yard until the past few days one particular deer has chased her up on the porch twice, and that does discourage her.
Around here, deer will eat anything except potatoes or the pungent herbs in the garden. A good source for ideas for combatting them is the book "Outwitting deer" by Bill Adler.
