I can recall several people impaled by the pipe that is the top rail on chain link fences during auto accidents around here over that last 20-30 years. No gates, though. Terrible thing for the wife to find him like that.

Back when I was in highschool we were practicing in the field after school when a female student drove through a partially open pipe gate nearby. We heard a loud crunch. It hit the right side of the car and impaled the engine compartment but no harm to her.

This is a little similar to walking through your home at night in the dark and hitting your chin, or other parts, on a 3/4 way open door. Even with your arms out in front of you it is easy to run into the door edge. Don't ask how I know.
