I think (2000 miles from home, so can't check) that it is only rated at 1,000 lbs. I didn't realize this when I bought it - and was hoping to use it on my 18' landscape trailer (~2000#) and, possibly (but not likely), for my 18' boat.
As best I can remember (I am only 500 miles from home) mine has a sticker stating a 1000 pound limit on it. I took that to mean that there was a 1000 pound tongue weight limit, not a 1000 pound trailer limit. I would have no problem using the hitch receiver for moving trailers on level ground, and even for applications where the trailer is lower than the tractor (hitch receiver in tension), as long as the safety chains were attached to the bucket. I don't think there would be any issue with launching and retrieving a boat for instance. I will never again allow the trailer to be above the tractor when using this hitch. P.S. I have had no response to my email from Payne's. Why do they bother to put a link to their email on their website, if they aren't going to respond?

would this be the hitch in question?
Paynes Forks Ball Clamp with 2in. Stem | Tractor Bucket Forks | Northern Tool + Equipment I see they have a small metal 'tab' on the back of it. I assume this is to hit the backside of the cutting end and keep it from sliding off. I would if possible add a piece of angle iron across the front of it to side against the cutting edge. this would prevent the hitch fro twisting side ways. Hope this helps..I also wonder how tight they expect you to be able to clamp it. Al

for what its worth, I bought a very similar item off ebay buy-it-now from mid south for around $70. I could see the same issue, but I've found it handy for moving things around none the less.

Sorry you had the same trouble. I see Curly has waited almost a month to hear from them. whether or not he has gotten a reply we don't know. But I think he is th type of member who would let us know. when they do notify him.
I sure cant wait to hear this response.

I just took a 12" chunk of 3" channel, welded a piece of 2" angle across it for the cutting edge to bear on and welded a receiver to the front of the channel. Bolted the whole issue to the bucket with a 7/8" bolt. The angle stops anything from spinning and spreads the weight of whatever is plugged into the receiver along the edge of the bucket. Probably worth $25, including the bolt....That commercial thing looks like a "one time use only".
