Three finger hadshake

I bought a wood chipper last week and the below story is a copy of a post I wrote up in the Attachments forum. The item in the description is a Goossen Chipper/Shredder that does not have a blower. The warning served me good especially after running the chipper and experiencing what a mean piece of equipment it can be.

There is an interesting story to go with the chipper though. The man who sold it said: "Be very careful with it! For real! Always pull the chips away from the chipper with a rake!" To underline his point he held up his right hand. His pinky and ring-finger were mostly missing and his middle finger was a digit short as well. My jaw dropped and after a moment of pause I asked if he did it with that machine. He said he was just pulling the chips away from under the discharge and his glove may have slipped into a hole on the bottom. "It was like ZZZIP! It pulled in my gloved hand and my fingers were gone in less than a second."
I thought about it a bit more, but I ended up buying.

I had an old Asplundh chipper that I sold a few years ago and that was one dangerous piece of equipment. No safety devices on it at all. I would only use it with someone else around. My wife's uncle borrowed it one time and afterwards told me that it was the most dangerous piece of equipment he had ever used. If I ever have a real need for one again, it'll be a newer one with a hydraulic feed and safety bars.

Actually, I think considering the circumstances "had shake" seems pretty appropriate.

Actually after making about 3 yards of chips in a few hours last weekend I'm happy that I got the chipper. I certainly see how it can be a mean SOB. I have a shovel and a rake to pull the chips away from the machine and always stand to the side when feeding it. That way it would be very uncomfortable to reach too close to the knives and even if I happen to fall I will not grab onto anything connected to the tractor. (I hope)

Ps: While the chipper is operating I do wear my chainsaw safety helmet with face shield and ear protection as well as goggles.
If anyone can offer pointers on farther safety it would be welcomed.

Actually, I think the previous owner gave you the best safety lesson there is.

I know for me, seeing the results on someone that you have spoken too, speaks volumes.
