Hi Folks,

For all those out there who ever thought of putting convenience over saftey, I have a link to the CDC website where they post summaries of Industrial accidents where there were fatalities. Some of these are tractor related. Some reports have pictues (of the equipment and scene - not the people who suffered the fatality).

While not for the faint of heart, there are some valuable lessons on how quickly a normal job can turn deadly. There are many cases on this page broken up into sections and each case is titled to give an idea of what misfortune was suffered. You will have to scroll down on the page to see the cases.

This should provide a little religion to those who ignore common sense, disable safety features and in general temp fate.

I think there are some very good lessons here. The reports detail very specifically what the situation was, where people were, what equipment they were using and how it worked, how the accident happned and even list the coroners determination on the actual cause of death.

If reading these make you think twice next time you are about to do something questionable on or around your tractor, then I think that this post will have been worthwhile.

A few relevant cases for those who don't want to sift through all the cases, there are many more, just as informative on the original CDC link in my original post:

Sleepyhollow,

From the chipper shredder accident.

CAUSE OF DEATH

The cause of death, according to the autopsy report, was total body fragmentation.

My God. I can only imagine something so horrible.

Yeah, I read that and thank my luck stars that I don't have to be exposed to that kind of danger in work place. It also makes me more hesitant to use the device even occasionally.

It's so deceiving, the intake throat on most chippers doesn't seem like it's that big. I can hardly imagine a worse fate. What about the remains, the family?

All we can do is be more careful.
