As a fire fighter,

youd spend less money and risk much less if you just went out the window after you opened the door to the hallway and found it full of smoke...

Actually the air supply is a good idea for people like me when I lived in the city. Out the window meant a fall of 22 floors. Out to the hall and to the stairway could be very smokey for many floors.
