Default Sparks coming out the exhaust pipe

Hi All,

I have a 2001, 30 horse power diesel compact tractor. I have noticed on occasion, mainly at night for obvious reasons, that sparks come out the exhaust pipe. There is not a lot of sparks and it is intermittent. The local dealer says it is carbon build up from not running it hard enough. Does this sound right or could this be a more serious problem.
