It has been a bad few months for fires in parts of Australia with many people losing their homes. I'm one of the lucky ones whose property survived but thought I'd share a few photos.

A fire had been burning near our farm for some weeks but it was in rugged country and it was impossible for the fire fighters to get at it. It was burning on a 40 mile front and finally the wind changed and we were in the firing line. Even then it was a lot of waiting for it to come.

Our rural firefighters here are all volunteers and they did an amazing job. Seven trucks and crews basically stopped the fire in its tracks. I came out of it exhausted and having had little sleep for 3 days - staying up to watch for flying embers.

End result is we lost a few paddocks but the house and sheds survived. It is now raining after months of no rain and the threat is over.

My last post was about moving my bridge after it was damaged by a flood! Who said choosing to live in the country is easy!

Wow, amazing pictures and scary stuff!

I must admit; I don't exactly follow the rules of my municipality when it comes to burning, but I follow some of my own that have served me well;

-spring and fall only
-dead calm days, no wind
-two days after a heavy rain, or several days of rain

Congratulations on getting through unscathed (nearly). Maybe time to evaluate roofing systems and clearances to flammable vegetation? I understand that extreme drought changes the picture somewhat; best to plan for the worst-case scenario.

I'm glad that the fire was extinguished and that your area is now getting some rainfall. Our township also has a Volunteer Fire Department. A great group of Men. I can't help with the fires but I can help with the Equipment and preparation.

What a fire! Great work by the fire crews! We were in a burn Ban here in Brazos County Texas for most of the year. The ban was lifted just a month or so ago. This is Texas, to dry then to wet! Glad you came out ok.
