I just heard about one of my father-in-laws barns and garages getting broken into on some property that he has that is away from his house. Has me thinking about getting some security around my place. The Sherriff told him there wasn't much he could do about it. Not much was stolen but starts making you think. I have a lot to lose and he has even more if they got into my barn near the house.

What are you guys doing for security, any good systems that you use and like for not rediculous amount of money $$$. I searched but didn't find much on here on that. I would be willing to spend 200 - 300 for something.

I have THREE Labs. Its bizarre how they know when I come and go, when Terri comes and goes, do nothing, and then someone unexpected or unknown arrives and they sound loud, angry and threatening. They stare out the window looking for any kind of motion and bark when something unfamiliar or unknown arrives.

I have several motion sensors placed in the main avenues entering my 25 acres. They turn on a vintage railroad crossbuck operating at the main entrance, sound alarms in the house and barn and also one on the golf carts I use to wander around the property. I also have several vintage rotating red police car type lights at the machinery shed and on the golf carts (I have two). I have live video cameras running at the entrances and can watch activity all around the outside from my office in the house day and night. I also set up some wireless routers around the place which happen to have unexpected SSID names unfriendly to trouble makers: "Michigan State Police" and "MSP Surveillance Unit #4". You really have to want to be here in order to survive a visit here unscathed. When friends or strangers come here to visit, they are informed that I know they are here becausae of the cameras and alarms. IE: I want them to broadcast the news that security is present 24/7. I shoot a .223 Rem 700 frequently and a Barrett M99 50BMG once in a while just to broadcast sound levels across the Township (and the County with the .50 !).

As I previewed this video to see if it was still there, the sensor tone played in the cart and the dogs responded to it just like the real deal ! These dogs are the best security system.

I'll bet you sleep very well at night! Nice set up.

As an IT security professional who loves technology, the best security system I have spends half an hour every night licking her own butt.

If anybody is going through your dog, a lock or security system won't stop them. Much better deterrent factor with barking than anything else to.

I share my little home with six of these. Even police, who stop by twice a year as part of routine property checks, are reluctant to knock on my door. They can hear a chipmunk walking on pine needles at 100 paces. :). Bonus, the never ending line of people knocking on my door wanting to sell me something ended.

I would love to have a dog but married someone who does not like dogs. I may still get one eventually. Always had one growing up and I love dogs.

Absolutely, dogs are the best security system money can buy. That's a great looking motorcycle/sidecar you have there by the way!

Dead bolts, night lights and 2 akita's are my first line of defense. Firearms if it comes to that.

I keep everything in and around my house with attached workshop. I have a doggy door that allows the dogs to come and go when they want, day or night. They do wake us up from time to time chasing racoons or whatever gets over the fence, but usually they just kill those critters and we find them in the morning. When I build my big storage barn and my much bigger workshop, I will extend the fence to those buildings so the dogs can protect them too. Akita's are very loyal, protective guard dogs. It's important for them to have a job to do!!!

What's funny is they know the different cars we drive, and when somebody comes over, they go crazy barking long before we can see the car coming down the driveway!!!! But if it's one of us, they are like puppies running up and down the fence wanting to play.
