I'll try and make this short. My last colonoscopy was 13 years ago at age 60, I was clean. I was going to have another at 70 but didn't. Recently in prep for an upcoming physical I did a stool sample test. It came back with some blood in the stool.

I immediately scheduled a colonoscopy. The results were not good, one small polyp, one very large polyp removed in pieces and one very large mass in the ascending colon. I was immediately scheduled for colon surgery, where they removed about 4-5" of the colon and reattached the bowel. The pathology came back cancerous with some small cells just outside the colon that were cancer.

After recovery from the surgery, another 4 weeks I will begin Chemo, 8 sessions every 2 weeks for 4 months. Could all of this been prevented if I had one at 70, probably not, but at least it has been caught and I will move forward.

So, get that colonoscopy on time!

Sure wish you luck with it. I had my last colonoscopy just over 3 years ago, at the age of 73, and before that I had one at the age of 68.

I was supposed to go for one last year but cancelled at the last minute due to the fact that the doctor performing it was suspended for poor judgement in his workplace and fatally injuring a patient (i knew this patient and did hear of the mistakes made before reading the scathing report in the newspaper) by performing very, shall we say sloppy surgery. Haven't been able to get another appointment since. I have done the stool test twice now and was clear and have the yearly finger probing.

Glad you didn't go to that Doc. I am lucky here, there are multiple specialists to chose from and my wife had used the gastroenterology Doc previously. The finger probe is usually a check for the prostate.

I also am not a fan of getting a colonoscopy, it is the prep that is the worse part. I already have been told I have to one again at six months, then 1 year and every 2-3 years after that. Oh well.

I guess the good news is that in the 22 lymph nodes that were removed there were no additional cancer cells. Just those 2 noted and they were removed with the mass. The surgeon felt that I should be cancer free, the chemo is a precaution.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words and thoughts.

I wish you well. There is no reason not to have a colonoscopy.Easy;maybe a little inconvenient but they do save a lot of lives.I had a problem in the past and now have one every three years;had about six in the last ten years or so.
