Re: Pitfalls of buying a used tractor

Yes, unless it's a fairly recent model, hours won't tell you much.
A common way to evaluate age is to look at the wear on the clutch and brake pedals.
If it's been used for field work, an oval...

Re: Pitfalls of buying a used tractor

One thing to do is learn to evaluate the fluids, crankcase, rear axle, and transmission oil. Also look for any oil in antifreeze.
Look out for major leaks. Most old tractors are going to leak oil....

    HPR Renewable Diesel

Curious to hear if anyone out there is running renewable diesel in their trucks or tractors.

Right now it looks like this is only available in California and Europe, but it looks promising.

    Tractor Longevity

I often hear (and I often believe) that older tractors are better than newer tractors. Why people would think so is pretty clear to see--just look around at all the 30, 40, 50 year old tractors...
  7. Buying Advice Re: Questions About New 2WD Utility Tractors by John Deere

Yes, the 5045e, 55, 65, and 75 are all available in 2wd. They just don't show the pictures on the website.
I have been asking too if they are good tractors, as I will be buying one soon. I've...

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. I've decided to go with the tractor. Looking forward to its arrival and hope I made the right decision. I'm hoping to grow old with the tractor rather than...

    Re: 2015 John Deere 5045e

Thanks for the replies Now for another question: There is a $2400 price difference between the quick attach H240 loader and the standard 512. I really wanted the quick attach, but that;s a lot of...

    2015 John Deere 5045e

I'm very close to buying a new 5045e 2wd with loader. In terms of function, this is the right tractor for me. I had been planning to get a low-hours used tractor, but right now I can get what I...

    oil additive

My Ford 4000 (3 cyl.) does an excellent job leaking everywhere. I'm planning to change the transmission and rear axle fluid. I'm going to put UTF in. I'd also like to add something that might...

    Ford 4000 Throttle Shaft

The throttle shaft on the carburetor of my 1969 Ford 4000 has worn unevenly and so is allowing some air to suck in. I want to replace this part without replacing the whole carburetor but I don't...

    Massey Question

I asked in a different thread a question which I think got side tracked. Basically I'm interested in a used Massey Ferguson around 50hp, preferably from the late eighties to early 2000s, a 245, 250,...

Buying Advice Re: Question for the Massey Folks

Buying Advice Re: Question for the Massey Folks

Yes, I agree, and in fact I have really like the 5055s, but as I said in my earlier post, I'm looking for a 50hp tractor with a loader for 15k or less. (I just liked the design of the 271. I don't...

Buying Advice Question for the Massey Folks

First, I'm looking for a tractor in the 50hp range, preferably with a loader. Probably the hardest work it would do is haying an 8 acre field. I might do a little plowing too. I'm looking for a...
