    Disc.... Hydraulic or not hydraulic

I'm in the market for a disc. Have a Kubota mx5100. Was assuming I would need to stick with a 3pt version, but in speaking with a friend with the same tractor, he advised that the 3pt discs don't dig in nearly enough and I should really try to get a hydraulic version. I'm a weekend warrior...

    Stuck filter

I went to replace my HST filter on a Kubota MX5100. I was literally hanging on the filter wrench, putting probably 150 ft-lbs torque on it. The thing wouldn't budge. Suggestions? I have ideas, but don't want to reef on it too hard for hear of damaging the threads/nipple on the tractor.

Mx 5100 hst 50 hr service: changing filters, reusing oil!

It's time for the 50 hour service. Checking the maintenance schedule in my manual, the 50 hr service specifies a change of the transmission oil filter, but shows that the transmission fluid does not need to be changed until 400 hours. The instructions for changing the filter include draining the...

3rd function valve failed wr long

Three days ago, everything worked perfectly. Yesterday, disconnected the grapple run by the valve, used the bucket for awhile, reattached the grapple, and blew a fuse when I tried to open the jaws. The jaws lifted about two inches. Replaced the fuse, ran through a dozen or so open/close cycles...

Miscanthus as biomass: Hype or Reality?

I've been looking into growing Giant Miscanthus. It seems like there's lots out there saying it's the next best thing. I've seen lots of articles by researchers and people trying to sell things, but very little from actual growers. Is anybody here growing it? What's your experience? I'm...

Help me stop trespassers/poachers: Onramental grass seed sources

I'd like to plant a seasonal hedge, about 1500' long. A tall ornamental grass seems like a quick and dirty option....pus i really like the look of some of the species. Anything 5 feet+ tall will suit the bill. I need cold hardy varietals (zone 4-5). I've hunted in vain for a reliable source of...

What's your favorite small, vintage, practial tractor? (What to avoid too)

If this were for me, I'd do the research and wouldn't ask everyone to help. Friends are trying to develop a scalable model for small scale sustainable/organic farming...small plots of grain, veggies, etc. this year, they've been busting their humps (no mechanization aside frm a rototiller)...

    Quack grass

I'd like to find a good, non round-up method of removing quack grass. This spring i put together a screen system (a 2x4 frame with construction cloth...shovel in dirt, shake, dirt falls throug, rhizomes and rocks remain) ha worked pretty well. Places where i used this have almost no grass...

Auction disc, needs some help, make? Model?

I hit a farm auction yesterday and couldnt stop myself from getting this...$150. One disk is broken and the rear two axles are bent. Hopefully after my time and money for repairs are spent, I'll still be ahead. If not...I ran it over 25 yards of grass...at least I'll have something that works...

towing 4500lb tractor with a Toyota Tacoma

I'm in the market for a flatbed trailer for a number of reasons, and am hoping to find something that can handle the tractor behind a Tacoma. The truck is rated to tow 6500 pounds. My Kubota with rimguard comes in at 4500. So I have at most 2000 pounds to play with in a trailer. I'd prefer...

    Plow sizing

I have a kubota mx5100 and need a plow. Based solely on HP, ive been told i should stick to a 2-bottom plow. The soil here is very sandy and has been turned fairl recently. Do you think a 14" 3-bottom will be okay? Preferred brand/model? Thanks!

    Grain equipment, small scale

I recently had a conversation with a local baker that wants to produce a local loaf of bread. There isnt a food source of local breadflour and he's asked if i'd like to work on the project. One aspect that may make things interesting,is that there is sufficient demqnd here to charge a premium on...

    Electric fence post spacing

Tracor supply has tposts on sale and i'd like to ge them while cheap. I'll be putting n 2000 ft of electric fence to keep snowmobilers out of my fields, not to contain animals. What ive been reading seems to sugges tight spacings (10ft or less) for largeish animals. Ive seen a few people...

Im new to tractors and have a new kubota mx5100. Works like a charm...except... Ive been finding small areas of pinkish drips in the snow after blowing but cant find the source. I havent seen/felt any obvious oily spots on the tractor and never find any spots where im parked. I think the leak...

    Grapple up, now or later?

I have a kubota MX5100 on order w/ a single rear remote. Delivery is scheduled for three weeks. This will be my first tractor experience... I just bought a large parcel (157 acres) and never had a need. The property was bought in foreclosure. The previous owner had it logged (butchered if you...
